MHB web enhancement - Races

kilamanjaro

First Post
WoTC had the web enhancement up for the Minis handbook a few weeks ago that featured 2 new races from the book, the catfolk and the stone child. I thought I'd reverse engineer the characters to get the racial mods. In case anyone is interested, here's what I came up with:
Catfolk +4 dex, -2 con, +2 cha
+10' movement
+1 natural armor
+2 listen and move silently
low light vision
LA +1

Stonechild +8 str, +6 con, +2 wis, -2 chr
immune to acid and poison
magic stone 3x/day
darkvision 60'
2 outsider HD
LA +4

If we assume the standard array of 15, 14, 13, 12, 10 and 8, I don't think that there is a penalty to Constitution. Let's see...
Str 14
Dex 15, +1 level, +4 racial for a total of 20.
Con 13
Int 10 (or 8 +2)
Wis 12
Cha 8 +2 (or 10)
The Charisa bonus seems most likely among those.

Stonechild +8 str, +6 con, +2 wis, -2 chr
This should be correct though. It seems obvious that the standard array was used here, too. It should propably be noted that the stonechild received no level-based increase to an ability score since it has two HD and thus is missing two HD for that. The stonechild also has a bonus feat, Blind-Fight.

That's not the standard array, that's the elite array, used for exceptional characters and monsters who advance, especially with PC classes. The standard array use for generic examples of a race is all 10s and 11s. There's also the nonelite array 13,12,11,10,9,8 for characters who still average out to standard scores but have their strengths and weaknesses spread out a little more. See page 290 of the revised Monster Manual for more details on this stuff.

Well, at least it was called the standard array in the 3.0 DMG for creating PCs. ;)

oops! I'm not sure where I went wrong on the catfolk, and I was going to edit in the blind fight feat this morning. Is it just me, or does the catfolk seem pretty strong for just a +1 LA?
