My DM, along with 3D printing, sure does have us spoiled compared to when I started in 1981 with popcorn as stand ins for minis.

Problem with 3D printing is it's almost a full-time hobby in itself. Once it gets to the ease and utility of just regular printing*, that's when I'll start getting interested!


*You know, 45 minutes of your computer not being able to find your printer even when it's right next to it, and then finding you ran out of ink even though you only printed one b/w leaflet since you last bought ink, and then finding you ran out of paper even though you bought a whole truckload of it last week and haven't used any in 15 years. That level of ease.

Very cool. While great looking, the stairs don't allow to place models. What do you do if you don't have enough movement to make it to the top or bottom?

I get it. For me, 3d printing is a no-go because I live in a townhouse, so the space and smell are prohibitive. Otherwise, I’d be all over it. Instead, I buy miniatures and Dwarven Forge, etc., to a similar effect.

It’s definitely exceeding the fantasies of my 1981 self with my handful of miniatures and Chessex mat. Are the games better for it, though? That I can’t say.

I agree that miniatures and terrain are best approached as their own hobby. They’re not for everyone, you don’t need them, but if you love them, you love them.

Frankly, most of the joy I get from elaborate sets comes in the building of them, anyway. I suspect OP’s DM is the same.

For most terrain, use a filament printer. No smell and messy chemicals that many resin printers involve. Oddly, the slight roughness many filament printers leave on pieces is a plus for terrain.

For the mini on stairs issue, a base with two appropriate length legs might do the trick.

I long ago solved the standard computer printer issue with a HP Laserjet 1200, back with HP made good printers instead of devices designed to force subscriptions to supplies. The HP is somewhere around 23 years old. Later picked up a Brother color laser on clearance from CDW. I played the inkjet game briefly before deciding that inkjets are devil spawn.

It's only a slight problem when the PCs get to the end of that map and the DM has to set up the next one. "This'll only take about 45 minutes, gang. That's just enough time for you to create backup characters."

You take out your gum and stick it to the bottom of the mini. Or some blu tack if you run out of gum.
