For most terrain, use a filament printer. No smell and messy chemicals that many resin printers involve. Oddly, the slight roughness many filament printers leave on pieces is a plus for terrain.

For the mini on stairs issue, a base with two appropriate length legs might do the trick.

I long ago solved the standard computer printer issue with a HP Laserjet 1200, back with HP made good printers instead of devices designed to force subscriptions to supplies. The HP is somewhere around 23 years old. Later picked up a Brother color laser on clearance from CDW. I played the inkjet game briefly before deciding that inkjets are devil spawn.

Yeah FDM is fairly odorless. You need to stand right next to it to notice, which is tempting because watching the printer do its thing is mesmerizing. The neat thing too is if you get ahold of the files, you can adjust it yourself in the slicer so the stairs work better with whatever minis you have.

I have my resin and thats another ball game. It will stink your house up and it is unpleasant. I built an hvac system for my basement workshop. IT works fantastic when the temps are above 20F. Then, it gets too cold and pushes back on the system. So, there are a few months of the year I wont run the resin. Though, the quality of miniature figures is unparalleled.

Stairs: having a 3D printer, I would print upsidedown 1’’ blocks that mirror the stair steps. They could hold a mini where ever they end.

The clutter isn’t normally there. He was shifting a bunch of stuff around on his shelves. Normally the table is clean without any of those papers and books all around.

It's only a slight problem when the PCs get to the end of that map and the DM has to set up the next one. "This'll only take about 45 minutes, gang. That's just enough time for you to create backup characters."

He places it as we explore, and it’s no slower than drawing it out on a map (which you can see under the model). We use the battle map probably half the time. Time constraints for printing between sessions lol. When I DMd, I often used a projector onto the map, I didn’t do 3D printing.

My DM, along with 3D printing, sure does have us spoiled compared to when I started in 1981 with popcorn as stand ins for minis.

I have so far resisted the 3D printing bug (despite being offered a free one twice!). I have, however, dived feet first into terrain crafting with foam (and other garbage) and got a Proxxon hot wire foam cutting table for it too.

I must admit, I overlooked the actual tile pieces on display. I am normally not a fan of 3D terrain or elaborate set pieces used at the game table. I find it distracting and cumbersome, especially when it dominates the play area. I prefer lowkey/low-tech accessories, like battlemats or dungeon tiles.

But taking a closer look, I actually like the minimalist design of the tiles shown here. These would be easy to store and setup quickly going from one scene or area to the next. I wouldn't do anything so elaborate or complex like this, but that's just me.
