Modification to a Manticore

If you were to remove the Spiked tail of a Manticore that allows a ranged attack for for a small amount of damage and replace it with a more traditional scorpion tail, melee attack but with Huge Scorpion venom (Fortitude save (DC 26) or initial and secondary 1d8 temporary strength damage) how would you modify its Challenge Rating?

You think its worth about a +1 to its CR?

I happend to get two of these mage knight figures in my last two boosters so I thought the party might stumble across a pair.

TrentonJoe's CR calculator says +2.



A DC of 26 is really high. 10th level characters with that as their good save will only pass roughly 40% and wizard types will probably fail 80%+.

What is a manticore normally? 6? 7? I'd tack on aleast 2 and if you play them like they have an intelligence (which I don't think they do) maybe even three.

You could have them fly in, sting for two rounds, fly away, come back one minute later and repeat.


Oh, and that is a cool miniature.
