D&D General Monk WotMA Subclass (and a few others) from Arcana Unleashed—Leaked!

EDIT: Sorry for double posting, I had not seen the other earlier thread on the same subject! Go there for a more fleshed out discussion:

This guy apparently received the full subclass text of the 4 new subclasses played in the DM season 2 show. Here is the video where he goes over the WotMA, but you could find the other three easily from there:
Overall, it’s somewhat similar to what we saw in the January UA, but there are a few significant changes:

1. The mechanic for recovering slots from Focus Points is a bit more restrictive / less abusable. Now you get to recover a single slot from your unexpended Focus Points when taking a Short Rest. Essentially, similar to Warlock pact magic, but a bit less powerful at equal level.

2. There is also a minor wording change to the Mystic Fighting Style which seems irrelevant. It now says you can replace an Unarmed Strike for a cantrip when taking the Attack Action. But even if you were holding weapons in both hands, you could still kick or headbutt, so the wording difference is immaterial as far as I can tell…

3. The level 11 feature is completely different. Instead of a concentration boost, you now get to impose a penalty on saving throws against your spells when using Stunning Strike, even if they succeed on the SS save!

4. And finally they fixed the capstone feature. It was basically useless as originally worded, but now it works off of Flurry of Blows, basically giving the rough equivalent of Quicken Spell MM for 1st and 2nd level spells (+1 more Unarmed Strike, since FoB at that level yields 3 attacks).

Pretty nice overall. I’m especially excited for the two level 6 features, which could open up a lot of interesting gish builds…!

It isn’t really a leak, it’s just a preview.
If the intent was strictly to preview the stuff, they would have posted it into the Play Along Pack on DDB…

This is a bit more roundabout. Whoops, who left this here? Well look at that, how quaint!

Let’s just say it’s neither a preview nor a leak, it’s simply marketing 😅

Anyway, what do you think of the new subclass 🍿 ?

Just updated this to Monk Handbook, and nlg, this new subclass is a new S tier and retroactively dumps down other subclasses a level by comparison.
That was clear from the moment it was announced to be in the book.

It was ridiculous to even put such a subclass into unearthed aecama because its a copy of a fighter subclass and fightee subclasses have a huger power budget /need to be really strong while monk subclasses are some of the weakest because the main class is so strong.

The problem I have is that now anything I could do with other subclass I can probably do better with this one aside maybe healing. Just writing down spells I noticed I could with thsi easily recreate the following tropes out of anime or wuxia or fightign games:
  • The barrage of blasts (Scorching Ray) before going into meele (Flurry of Blows). At 17 level you could even get MORE attacks out of using the feature that replaces two Flurry attacks with a spell if you use it on this spell.
  • A threatening aura of violence that makes enemies flee in terror (Fear) or make them fight each other rather than yourself (Confusion)
  • Kamehamehadouken (Fireball, Laeral's Silver Lance, Lightning Bolt)
  • That one trick where character moves so fast their afterimage appears as illusions of themselves or simple Bushin no Jutsu from naruto (not the one Naruto does, just simple illusion) (Mirror Image)
  • Being the Avatar (Gust of Wind, Sleet Storm, Ice Storm, Fire Shield, Wall of Fire, Lightnig Bolt, Fireball)
  • Combo ending on empowered energy attack (replace last attack in Flurry+attack action with True Strike or Shocking Grasp)
  • Single person ZA WARUDO (Hold Person)
And also you can do Darkness like Shadow Monk, have access to a lot of caster cheese, can get spellcasting part of Dragonmark without multiclassing and thus potent Dragonmark for Conjute Minor Elementals Cheese, and stunning strike helps now to set up enemy to fail a saving throw against a spell.

It is kinda sad but there is very little this Monk cannot do better than other Monks.

Well thats a general 5e problem (that 5.5 could not solve) that spells are just more flexible (and often more powerfull) than anything non spell. Fighter does not have this problem because fighter subclasses add just soo much power in general. And also add non combat utilities. While monk subclasses add neither.

Even if you leave the utility and possibilities away, from level 6 on this subclass

  • has higher average damage thanks to cantrip without the use of a ressource which scales automatically at level 11 (and 17) (And can even have some area attack with it)
  • Has access to more focus points in a single period between short rests.
  • Can store unused focus points for later fights if necessarily (especially from level 7 on. 3 focus points to transform into a level 2 spell slot which gives 2 focus points if needed is quite an efficient use of "not used up ressources")
And on top of that is also a lot of utility from spell casting for outside of combat and more defenses (shield and similar spells) and as you said for later levels also more potential burst (a level 2 spell does more damage than 2 basic attacks)

And this subclass just gets stronger the more spells are released/allowed.

If you can use green flame blade as one example (which is ad optional on the sorcerer spell list and many people play with it) then you just have 1d6 more damage on basic attacks from level 6 on with no ressources even in the worst case. And if 2 enemies stand next to each other you have more area damage than the elemental subclass when spending ki points for free.

I mean, WotC gave him an early copy of the book, he asked what he was allowed to share from it, and they said anything except images of the physical pages. That’s a preview, it’s just a preview done through a 3rd party, which is pretty common practice. WotC does the same thing with Magic cards all the time.

Sure, I guess marketing is a fine term for it.

Seems pretty neat! I don’t love that the FP-as-Metamagic mechanic got a lot more restrictive, but it does make sense to avoid another coffeelock situation. Other than that, no complaints.
