Monte Cook pens Dungeon Crawl Classics #50: Vault of the Iron Overlord

Chaos reigns in the kingdom as the king and queen have died, leaving no heirs. The heroes are commissioned to go into the king’s vault to retrieve the scepter of succession, a magical relic that legends claim to be able to determine who should be the rightful ruler of the kingdom. The king kept his treasures in no ordinary vault, however. The so-called Vault of Rings was designed to not only keep out thieves but to train his heir, who would be unable to access the kingdom’s wealth until he or she could overcome the trials and obstacles found within the vault...

This special module marks the fiftieth adventure in the Dungeon Crawl Classics series. The adventure features a unique map composed of concentric rings that rotate as the characters explore the dungeon. The module is printed to include a map on the inside cover that physically rotates, so the DM can follow the dungeon rotation as the players explore!

If you enjoy this adventure, look for the rest of the Dungeon Crawl Classics series!

Writer: Monte Cook
Additional Writing: Søren Keis Thustrup
Cover Artist: Erol Otus
Back Cover Artist: Eugene Jaworski
Editor: John Cooper
Cartographer: Jeremy Simmons

GMG5049, 40 pages with rotating map, $14.99
For levels 7 to 9.

Note the Erol Otus cover and John Cooper editing!

Swap out the hook for getting the characters into the vault with something else -- almost anything could be stored in such a vault, after all -- and this sounds pretty darn portable, as many DCCs are.

Muh?

What happened to 'retiring from the RPG industry', or some such?

Not that I mind in the slightest, incidentally. But does also this mean "he's back" in the general sense? :uhoh:

That would be cool. :)

I'm wondering if maybe he wrote this a while back and Goodman was sitting on it. I suspect that rotating wheel map took a while to negotiate with the printers.

If he is back, I humbly request a hard copy Secrets of the Delver's Guild and a Complete Book of Not-Eldritch Might collecting the rest of the Might books into one volume.

I'm pretty sure I remember Monte saying he was done except for his World of Darkness and "one other smaller product."

I don't remember where I heard this, or when, but it's ringing a lot of bells for me. Assuming I'm not just smoking crack and he did say this, or something like it, I imagine this module is what he was talking about.

Oh. :o

Yes, I hadn't um, really thought about that possibility.

Heh. :heh:

edit --- ah, the Mouse has insight I did not. I probably missed that extra bit about the smaller project.

Sound very interesting. Colour me intrigued. And it's good to see a publisher putting John Cooper's talents to use.

Edit: It's called Vault of the Iron Overlord for those that are interested.

I think it's like Leonard Nimoy, who recently stated he was "retired except for any Star Trek project of note that might be offered to him in the future".

So maybe Monte is retired except for any RPG projects of note that come his way? :)

Tam-tam-Taaaaam! *eerie sounds all around*

Maybe Monte is setting up Søren Keis Thustrup as a alias, so he can continue write for RPGs after he migrates into literature. Sort of like how Stephen King introduced Richard Bachman. *gasp*
