Movement modes with mounts??

I am wondering how other DM's or if anyone has found any rules on what to do with character's using powers to move while on mounts ? For example, how would you handle a Sorceror who uses Spark Form on a mount ?? Would the sorceror take the mount with him, and if so, would it be a medium square that goes zippin thru the mobs, or a large square which is the size of the mount ?? Also, when a character shifts more than 1 square from using a power, like the Ranger's cut and run ?? etc

Any help or suggestions where to find answers would be appreciated, thanks

Good question. After reading over the mount rules in the dmg, and seeing nothing that covers it, I'd rule that unique movements apply to the character only. The power only affects you, so why should you mount benefit? But that's just my opinion.

I would agree; a character's movement does not also move the mount. The reverse is not necessarily true though. A character with the mounted combat feat MAY obtain the advantage of a mount's special movement.

However given the existence of the Saddle of the Nightmare mount slot item I would say that a teleporting mount leaves it's wielder behind (or has to explicitly state that it takes it's wielder with it)

Hence my use of the word "may" ;)

I like to err on the side of "which is coolest for the player if neither choice is unbalancing?" I think I'd generally allow most special movement to work with the mount, as mounts are the sort of cool option I like to encourage. That's without looking at a rule book, though - if there's a definitive answer one way or another, I'll follow it.

If this resulted in "the mount climbs a wall at full movement speed" and the mount was a horse instead of a giant spider, though, I'd probably change my mind. :D

I think it would depend on the specialness of the mount.

If this is the nameless horse I bought for five gold and use to get places faster off screen, then no.

If this is Swift Wind my trusty steed whom I ride into battle and is as close to me as a brother, then okay.

The more I thought about this, the more sure I am about how I'd rule (which is 'no' on the special powers also working on the mounts).

Sure, If the mount has special movement (fly), you get it because you are mounted on it. But, YOU are the rider on the mount, not the other way around. Why should the mount benefit from your special movement?

If you allow this to apply, I can see a creative player saying, "I run over to Bob and jump on his back and use 'Get the Hell out of Here' and teleport us both 8 spaces over there."

Special movement powers are meant for the character, not the character and someone (something) else.

Did you have to say Swift Wind? Really? curse you! Now I'll never get She-Ra out of my head...

(For those not realizing the reference, in the cartoon She-Ra (sister to He-Man), she rode a winged horse named Swift Wind that spoke in a deep deep scratchy smoker's voice... it was a strange dichotomy. ;) )

(end thread hijack)

Note the section on Forced Movement in the DMG pg. 46, "If an attack that forces movement targets you but not your mount, you can choose for your mount to also be affected, so that you and your mount continue to move together. If you don't want your mount to be affected, you can be pushed off your mount if the forced movement carriers you out of the mount's space."

IMO, I think it's silly that an opponent could let you share a power, albeit the opponent's power, with your mount, but you can't. Although the rules don't explicitly say that you can share a power with your mount, I would rule that you can.
