Wizards of the Coast announced multiple sets of Reference Cards newly updated for 5.5e will be released this August. Early access is August 4th.

There will be 3 decks of spell cards retailing for $19.99 each, 2 decks of magic items retailing for $24.99 each, and 3 decks of monster cards retailing for $24.99 each. Spell cards and magic item cards will be "standard sized" while the monster cards will be double sized and feature new art. According to the news release, the spells only go up to level 5, the monsters are only for challenge ratings 0-5, and legendary magic items are not included, so I assume there will be more decks released at a later date.

More details as well as some illustrations are here:

They can be preordered as a set (at a discount) or individually on D&D Beyond here:

Cards are useful.

I prefer making my own though.

Potentially, I could see a DM buying monsters cards and not needing to buy the MM, although cards with all MM entries will be largely more expensive.

Spell cards and magic item cards will be "standard sized" while the monster cards will be double sized and feature new art.

Should be noted that Monster cards are not all getting new art, as the Spectator they show is the same as the Monster Manual.

The Goblin Minion shown in the D&D Beyond Marketplace preview is new art, so it seems it will be new art for the monsters that did not get specific pieces in 2024 (Dragons notably only got 3 art pieces, with either Young or Wyrmling missing).

Also, magic items without unique art will be getting art for their cards, as seen on the + Shield preview.

I have always liked the idea, but think I would buy more if I was a player more. The cost of $20 per deck of spells getting you 100ish cards is ok for a gift or something, but you need a deck for level 0-1 spells, another for level 2-3 and the third for level 4-5 spells. Suddenly that is $60 and you do not have all the spells. I'm not sure I would like it better if one deck gave you just wizard spells or cleric spells level 0-5 over all classes. I know that many spells cross class, but not sure how I feel.

As the DM the monster cards seem like something more I would buy. I like having a picture to show the players, but they list half the stats on the same side as the picture, plus my group has been playing for a while and know what most things look like. So maybe it is not that big a deal then. I will look at them when they come out. At $25 per deck maybe buy the animals and beasts one with CR0-5 and it would be cool for the druid or ranger to have if it works for the summoned or shapechanged stats.

The old Gale Force 9 spell cards were also around $20 a pack, and they had 12 or so to cover all the spells. The only difference is that they did spells in class packs instead of in level packs. So if you were going all in on the cards the investment was roughly the same, though obviously the GF9 ones were easier for players to buy piece meal.

Per class decks for spells is better IMO… doesn’t matter if a spell is on both the Cleric’s and Wizard’s spell lists… chances are you’ll have both a Cleric and a Wizard around the table, and it’s no fun pretending that a given spell is in shared custody and only one of the two characters can prep it on a given day 😅

BTW, if you’re interested in printing and crafting your own cards, I have found the spells tool on aidedd.org to be very good. You can set it to 2014 or 2024 content, use various filters, and you can even customize the size of the cards. Plus, besides English, there are French and Spanish translations too. Really top notch. Note that you have to load the site on a desktop computer to see the card generation button, it is hidden on mobile.
