D&D General My character is infected with a Blue Slaad's chaos phage. Now what?

Dragonhelm

Knight of Solamnia
Yesterday, my human fighter (psi warrior) was caught up in a battle against some slaad on the astral plane. He was infected both by a red slaad egg and the chaos phage/magical disease that is rewriting his DNA.

I should note that this is a science fantasy game, where D&D meets a Star Trek clone.

I'm trying to figure out my options. Currently, my character is stuck in "sick bay" while the players are on the astral plane. They've encountered the husk of a dead god and have been told by our space station's doctor to be on the lookout for a cure.

So next session, my character is stuck doing nothing while he will eventually transform into a slaad. I don't feel like I have a lot of options, and I may land up just sitting there.

One option I have, beyond normal cures, is that there is a way for my character in his world to transform into a being of living crystal. Think Crystar from Marvel Comics. The DM already has his version of Crystar as an NPC. Now, that process rewrites DNA in a magical fashion as well, but would that be a cure, or would the crystallization process just react weird against the blue slaad infection? I don't know.

So, what are my options, and how can I insure I'm not sitting on my butt twiddling my thumbs next session?

I would make a 'red shirt' NPC to tag along with the other PCs while you are in sick bay. You do not want to show up to play and not be able to do anything but roll a saving throw once per day. At least with a NPC you can still play and contribute something. Can you work with the DM before the sessions and come up with something?

Yeah, I've considered this. I'm sure I could come up with an appropriate character.

off-topic, but a similar problem is hard CC's during combat and why it should be avoided by DMs at all cost.

we had a session in 3.5e/PF1 rules few years back, friend failed a save vs cause fear in round 1, DM rolled a 4, as usual, then the friends PC spend 4 rounds sprinting away from the battle and then sprinting 5 rounds back, as the battle moved in opposite direction a little. 9 rounds later he just saw last "redshirt" getting stabbed and battle being over.

several hrs of battle and one player rolled 1(one) d20 roll and was basically "killed off" for that session. Talk about antifun.

we told the DM that he will never do that again and he never did, it was a good campaign from that point forward.

as for your case, as @aco175 mentioned, either a "redshirt" or a new PC that will continue as a replacement, but no one should sit around for 4-8 hrs. Just the tell me not to come to next session.

if my PC is ever in that situation, I would ask DM; will I be able to act somewhat normally within 1hr in next session?
If not just kill off the PC and I'm coming to session with a new one.

also, DMs should avoid looking for "perfect" situation to introduce a new PC.
you do it right at the start of the session, even if it needs some stupid deus ex machina, like new PC is fiddling with a teleportation scroll and just materialize at the party's location.

Use the transporter to transport the documented "You" portion and leave behind the "Slaad egg" and "Plague" portion. If those patterns are too scrambled with your own, bite the bullet and just clone yourself with the transporter using the version of you that beamed down to the planet before you were infected, and off the "Current You" so there's no redundancy. Be suitably sad about the sacrifice. The evil you will somehow survive and show up next season.

Continue playing as a blue slaad? Rename your character Leonardo, buy two katanas, a breastplate made out of turtle shall, and multiclass into an assassin rogue.

Edit: Get your hands on a scroll of find familar to summon / or just aquire a pet giant rat and name it Master Splinter, and refer to it as being your father frequently :P

Another possibility, have someone cast reincarnation and have that spell nudged by a deity so that the PC comes back as a Tortle. Preferably a Tortle deity. ;)

Then have the PC find a Ratfolk Sensei to learn the ways of the Shinobi (ala Naruto). ;)

A bit radical but concede the original character is dead and create a new character. Star Trek crew death is sadly a rather common thing.

Let the original character covert to a slaad, then drive the GM nuts playing the new slaad version of your character.

Embrace the 'Living Crystal' thing but call it a Tholian. A very Star Trek thing to be.

If the GM doesn't embrace alternatives that let you play something, discover "Things that urgently need doing" around your living space and skip the session. Better to get things done then be bored and frustrated for the session.

Maybe I should also find a mind flayer to impregnate me with a tadpole.

So, a psionic crystal slaad mind flayer. I'm certain the DM will have ZERO problems with that. o_O
