My sister almost attacked a Pregnant Woman!

Yep, my sister almost beat a pregnant woman with her bare hands.

Of course, haing just had her baby 48 hours previously (and 1 month prematurly) she was a bit tired to go through with it.

And seeing as her baby had liver, lung, and was being force fedthrough a tube in it's nose, she was a little bit more concerned about getting to her baby as soon as possible than re-enacting a Jerry Springer moment. (The baby's fine now, liver, lungs up to speed & sucking down bottles every 3 hours. He just got to go home today; which is why I'm here at my keyboard and not at a hospital on the other side of the state).

What drove this young woman to consider taking her new level in barbarian rather than mother? The woman was smoking a ciggarette. In fact every time we went into the hospital, we saw here standing outsside lightinng up, or on her way to the smoking area outside. Fo my sisiter (who did everything she could to try to get her baby to full term) she could not believe any mother would do that to her baby. She was so furious I thougth she migh tgo up to the woman & give here an earful, bu tseeing as how she narrowly avoiding having to be given a blood transfusion, she was a bit tired to go 8 rounds.

Now, I often work with people with disabilites & mental retardation. I know what momma's who smoke to to their babies. It's not pretty. In fact, in this case....

Apperently, they had this woman walking the halls to try to jump start her labor (that's how they do it). The staff couldn't do a damn thing if she wanted to go out & have a smoke. It's her right to smoke if she so chooses. She so chose.

Now, as I'm leaving the hospital for the last time, I see a woman in a wheelchair crying. It's the smoking lady. The nurse is telling her how here baby has a low birth wieght, some deformities, & his brain appears to be underdeveloped. She's hysterical as the nurse is bascially telling her how screwed up her baby is. She says she needs a moment. Wheels herself outside & lights up a cigarette. I work in a place where I see the long term effects of stupidity. And how that stupidity affects others. When that other is a baby & when you know what the baby'e life is going to become....

It hurts. It really hurts. So, if you are going to have a baby. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF & THE BABY. Don't drink, don't smoke. Go to the doctor, take all the multivitamins & junk they force down you. Anything you can do to increase the chance of a healthy baby will pay dividends for decades to come.

That goes for you to dad's to be too. DON'T SMOKE AROUND THE PREGNANT LADY. IN fact, it would be best if you minimize her inhalation of smoke particulates & you quit too, or at least shower & wear fresh clothes.

I've seen the babies of smokers & drinkers (many are OK, but so many have so much wrong). 9 months on your part can save decades on your child's.

End public service anouncement.

That's bad. I'm deleting the rest of the post I had composed because I realize that it may cross the line into politics and I don't want be rude or wear out my welcome here. Suffice it to say that I'm saddenned to hear about this woman's idiocy, her addiction, and her birth-defective child.

I have learned that tobacco, alcohol, and cat litter are all very dangerous for unborn children (more so even than cocaine) and I wish more people knew the real dangers they face.

How was it that you managed to not serve as your sister's proxy in the asskicking?

Well, She was still pregnant at the time. (the smoking lady).

Plus, I sort of hoped maybe their was some sort of back story, like she hadn't smoked while pregnant, just the stress of trying to kick-start the labor made her finally start smoking again.

And there is a possibilty that is the case. Every day smokers have healthy babies. Non-smokers have sick babies. Just the chances of having a sick baby go up if you smoke.

I wish the woman would have had a healthy baby. I feel (asshamedely) a sense of ironic justice at this smoker's plight. I just wish the baby didn't have to be the one to suffer for her mother's chioces.

I went to war with one of my sisters because she smoked while pregnant. I think it was so dumb. She didn't care.

I have little love for smoking. I have a theory that smokers also tend to be more aggresive drivers aka stupid drivers. I don't mean all smokers are this way and I don't mean all stupid drivers are smokers. This may not be true where you live. This is what I see in my city and only from my point of view.

Well, first things first. Congrats Uncle Vraille. :)

Now to business. I see the kind of irresponsible actions that the smoking lady took every day. Friday night I went on a narcotics raid and we found young kids in what was basically a crack den. This wasn't personal use, this was a place to buy your drugs, and then smoke up before you left (this makes it hard for law enforcement to send in an informant to prove you are selling drugs).

Adults get to make choices, and know the consequences. Children don't get a say. Sometimes it really gets me down to see the way many children suffer for other peoples decisions. The kids from the crack house on Friday aren't much better off now than they were before the raid. They have been turned over to family members of the woman who was dealing. These family members knew what was going on in that house and condoned it. The dealer is a non-violent offender, and a woman, so even if convicted of felony trafficking she will serve less than a year in prison, at which time she will regain custiody of the kids. I wish I had an answer for all these issues. :(

This might be one of those days where you need to be rude.

"Excuse me, but smoking is dangerous to your child. I think you should put that cigarette out, and take your pregancy as an opportunity to quit altogether."

:(

I personally have three known very minor physical deformities because my mother smoked during the preganancy - and I'm thankful that it isn't worse. These thinks are just bad.

But heh, at least she wasn't smoking crack.
