My thoughts on WOTC saying "we'll give you a leat a years notice" saying at GenCon.

OK, WOTC said at Gencon that before they put out 4th edtion, they will give us at least a years notice. But they did not say how much notice they will give us for 3.75, 3.80, ect. ;)

I'm not too concerned with incremental changes like the 3.0>3.5 changes. I can deal with that. I think a years notice is just fine, and since they'll almost certainly announce and release at a Gencon, that would mean late 2007 is the earliest date.

Hehehehe... That's like poking the doomsayers with a pointed stick, Ken. :D

I'm trying to figure out the most diplomatic way of saying this and coming up with nothing, so here it is. Has anyone considered that DMG II and PHB II might be the sort of incremental change you're talking about?

And no, this is not coming from any inside knowledge. My knowledge of the internal workings of WotC is pretty well out of date on most topics, this being one of them. I'm as much in the dark as you guys now.

Actually, it doesn't even tak THAT much critical analysis to look at it. Chris saying, "We'll give you 1 to 2 years notice" (assuming he'd be in the loop, and he would be) is saying that there is NO current plan to release a new edition. If there were, usually it's in development between 1 and 2 years, and it's announced almost a year ahead of time.

So, even if the decision was made TODAY, "let's make a new edition," then it takes anywhere from six months to a year to develop and do initial playtests, then it gets announced 8 months to a year before release. Chris was saying "we have no current plans" in the subtext. His bases would still be covered if he got back to the office from Gencon and was told they should seriously consider another edition right now.

If you want to be a conspirator, no need to even go so far as "he didn't say 3.75" ;) - Occam's Razor, man, the conspiracy buffs should just say he's LYING! It's quicker! :)

I have the DMG II, its basically just a book on how to be a better DM, no real hard rules to speak of. Its still good. But no rules.

"3.5 Revised" or "D&D Cyclopedia" coming in 2006.

So, that means next GenCon Indy (August 2006) they will officially put out the notice. IOW, we got a year's advance notice that WotC will put out a year's advance notice. :p

FWIW, at least 4e will come out after the release of the leatherbound Monster Manual 3.5e (Fall/Winter 2006). :p

Yeah that's great. But for all these people talking about 'the next edition' why are you so worked up? (I am not suggesting that the original poster here is worked up but many are.) Who says you have to run out and buy it?

I never bought 3.5 and don't feel like I am missing anything. I bet I could sneak into a D&D game, fudge it and nobody would be the wiser.

All it took was for one NPC to use "hasted, harm, magic missile" to utterly take out a PC with no save possible before all the PCs in my game clamored for a switchover to 3.5. It certainly fixed most of the egregiously broken elements of the game.
