Nature Priest

Byronic

First Post
I'm surprised that no ones noticed this before, isn't the Nature Priest (from the upcoming advanced player's guide) going to have some problems with his AC?

The Nature Priest has all 3 light armour proficiencies and has Wisdom as a primary ability supported by Charisma and Constitution.

Because of this the Nature Priest is likely to have a low Strength which makes it unable to get the Heavy Armour feats. However, because of its ability requirements it is also unlikely to have a high Dex or Int. This would result in having a much lower AC then other classes likely to wear light armour (Wizard, Warlock, Rogue and Ranger for example).

Am I missing something? Does the Advanced Player Guide have a feat allowing a Druid to use Wisdom to boost their armour? They don't seem to have a class feature that compensates for this.

Sounds like you either:

A) Start with 12 STR (bumped to 13 in Paragon) and burn feats on Chain, Scale, and Shield. Should be backed up by your good CON.

B) Pump DEX and use scimitars or longbows. Seems like good potential for multiclassing with Ranger.

C) Accept a lower AC.

Is there a source for this info or is it just specullation?

Edit: Oh you mean the other book that's not from WotC with those alternate classes! Is it out yet?

An Elf Nature Priest could fairly easily start with S8, C13, D16, I10, W18, Ch14, a 17 AC (+3 from hide, +1 from light shield, +3 from dex). Not so different than a Staff Wizard with Leather armor. Elves, Dwarves, Half-elves, and Halflings will be the more viable races for this class. Tiefling might be interesting as well, going with Int instead of Dex. And a Dragonborn would have an easier time grabbing better armor proficiencies, while gaining double benefits from a decent Con, between dragonborn abilities, and Elemental Affinity.

Also we don't know all the attack powers yet. It might be possible to dump Cha, based on the build, which would free up points for a higher Dex. Unfortunately the class gets no Dex skills to benefit from a high dex.

I don't think it's really an issue; the Nature Priest is a controller, and overall they can start with the same AC as a Wizard (before feats). The Wizard can get +4 from Int but has basically no armor proficiencies, whereas the Nature Priest typically won't have an Int/Dex bonus but can get +3 from hide and +1 from a light shield. So both classes can easily get AC 14.

It's true that Wizards can easily get leather armor with a feat (which has no prereqs) to bump up to 16. But then, the Nature Priest can get to scale with only two feats with fairly low prereqs.

And has been already said, while the writeup says the important stats are Wis, Cha, and Con it looks so far like the only really crucial one is Wis, which may make Wis/Dex (or even Wis/Str/Con) Nature Priests multiclassed into Ranger pretty popular.
