Alternately titled, "How to challenge high-power players with low-level challenges"
So I've been running a game for two players, both level-5 gestalt (Conjurer/Cleric and Fighter/Ranger). The power level is pretty enormous, and they make short work of most EL 6+ encounters I throw at them. I hand out XP and loot like candy (even with the +1 level XP adjustment).
So I want to try a different tack. I'd like to try challenging them with creatures below their level, and see if battlefield-and/or-situation-shaping can present an adequate challenge.
What tricks do you use for challenging powerful characters with non-powerful creatures? I haven't planned tonight's session yet, so it could potentially take place anywhere, though they'll probably be in a fey-and-elfy forest at some point.
