Need more "Side Treks"

I really wish WoTC would have a lot more side treks in Dungeon. There should be at least 1 per issue in my opinion.

I think Side treks are invaluable sources of random encounters.

I'm putting together the "world" for my next campaign, and one of the ideas I want to use is kind of Area "Levels."

IE The Swamp of Misery is level 7. In it would be encounters and adventures generally around 7th level. (Plus or minus.) And a skill challenge tied to the location...

Basically instead of rolling for random encounters, it would be tied to a skill challenge. If the players want to make it through a location without encountering something they'd run through a skill challenge of specified level. Failure means they encounter something (and probably variations thereof.)

My ultimate goal is to make it so players can pick their various travel routes, and determine how much danger/reward they take upon themselves... They wouldn't know the exact numbers, but a relative idea.

Isn't a Dungeon Delve essentially a side-trek in a campaign? You can always flavor it up any way you like and even add skill challenges, but if you set it up for the right level, everything usually ends up lining up well. I'd try the Dungeon Delve book or finding a user-made dungeon delve online.

Well yeah Dungeon Delve is great. I just want to see more side treks, because I think they're really really useful.
