New Bond Movie: Casino Royale - I am really looking forward to this

I'm a huge Bond fan and am really looking forward to the new movie. For those that don't know, they are using the very first Bond book, Casino Royale. It will feature a younger, "rookier" [is that even a word?] Bond. If they do it right, it could be really good and bring the franchise back into a more plot-driven rather than explosion-driven movie. :)

Also, more tabloid rumors are pointing to Clive Owen possibly being Bond. I think he would be a very good choice.

So, I have never read any of the Bond novels. Would it be suggested I read Casino Royale in this particular case? I remember my Dad saying that a lot of people were dissapointed that it wasn't done as a serious movie originally becasue it was one of the best novels.

Also, if they are going with a younger, (which I dont' know as I thought Clive Owen was in his 40's) rookie Bond are they going to keep what continuity exists in the Bond franchise? John Cleese, Bond's reputation?

I've never read the first book either but it is what started the franchise so it's probably really, really good. :)

The original Casino Royale was done for American television. Heck, they called him "Jimmy" Bond. The Woody Allen send-up was really funny.

They are going to keep continuity. AFAIK, this movie will give us an idea as to how Bond got the way he did; keeping women at a distance, becoming the cool, slightly jaded, superspy, etc. Apparently, he had a love interest in the book and somehow this becomes the reason for his lack of emotional attachment with women.

The books are VERY different from the movies. VERY, VERY different.

I love them. I think they're great writing. Nobody reads like Ian Fleming.

But lots of people come to them expecting the movies, and go away disappointed.

Just pretend there's not really any connection between them and that'll probably be best. I'm just hoping this movie's no worse than, say, Goldeneye. I've given up hoping for a good Bond movie.

For the past few years, I've been hoping they'd go back to Bond's roots and make the movies period pieces. Bond is a product of the Cold War -- of the start of the Cold War, in the 1950s.

I'll be suprised if it is better then the ....umm..first bond movie with this title......

The first was a made for TV movie where they called him Jimmy Bond. The second was the spoof by Woody Allen. This will be the first theatrical release of a real Bond film using this title. :)
