How's the quality of the books if anyone has the current ones? I'm going to wait for the new 2026 set but I've not had any OSE in print.

Quality in terms of production value, like print and binding and art and such? Top-notch.

I have both the Classic Fantasy single book version and the two-volume (Players' and Referee's Tomes) Advanced books. If you have Shadowdark in print, as a reference point, it's like that was modeled almost directly on the OSE hardcovers. Same size and paper and cover weight and so forth. OSE has full color art and two red and blue ribbon bookmarks as opposed to SD going monochrome and silver on the cover with a black ribbon bookmark. OSE uses a little smaller font as well, so you get more text per page. Which I'm going to say is why OSE Classic is a bit thinner, around 288 pages compared to SD's 326.

Yeah, everything printed by Exalted Funeral, which Necrotic Gnome has handle their printing, is ludicrously well made, although you may need to be patient when it comes to initial Kickstarter print runs. (Currently pacing back and forth, waiting for Glumdark to ship.)

Basic is now back in print (well, POD), so it's a great pivot for Gavin to go with a more "integrated" OSE (classic + advanced) to make it an even more valuable resource. The quality of the books, too, will be a huge factor because they'll last forever, while the OBS PODs of Basic and Expert, while good, aren't anything close to amazing.

Just chiming in to say that my copies of the Advanced Player's Tome and Referee Tomes are some of the nicest, most well-bound books I own. I'm hoping that the new version cleaves to this tradition.

Yeah, it turns out all the fun stuff they're doing with layout makes getting registration, etc., hard. I know the book will be worth the wait; it's just ironic that the one year subscription to the website will likely expire before the books arrive.
