New Orleans - good FLGS/book stores?

Hi folks---

I'm flying to New Orleans on Sunday for a conference for work next week; are there any good gaming stores or used book stores with fantasy/sci-fi books (games would be OK too) in town?

I don't know if there are any left in New Orleans or if they reopened. If you have time to break away there is one here in Baton Rouge called Little Wars, I've always enjoyed spending time and occasionally my money there. I get most of my stuff on-line now because:

1. It's cheaper
2. No taxes

The north shore was a dead zone for gaming stuff even before Katrina. Not so sure about the Big Easy, every time I have been there was either for business or drunk ass good times. Didn't do much window shopping either way.

Not in New Orleans proper (its in Metairie, a suburb probably less than 20 minutes drive depending ...) is a little store called Galactic Gaming (I'm almost positive its still open, but not 100% ...) Not really big on the novels, but lots of gaming, mostly Warhammer and such but a nice sized wall worth of DnD and other games. I don't know the address off hand, but its on West Esplanade close to Causeway. If you're interested, I could try to find the address for you.

More generally, most of our local gaming stores closed down after the storm. There was never a really thriving gaming scene here (at least, not one I could find) so I guess most store owners just figured they'd cut their losses after the storm. Hell, the guy who I play with made a killing taking stuff that wasn't damaged but was unwanted out of the trash piles from a few closing down game stores. Paint and minis aplenty, lol!

Caliber did that store used to be called 'Wargames and Fantasy'? I haven't been there in... well at least 8 years but from what you said about where they are that sounds like the place. I didn't know if they were still open or if they had changed their name.

That's a nice looking store. I'm used to game stores in the South usually being a lot less professional looking.

Unfortunately, no Wargames and Fantasy has closed.

That was the gaming store of my youth, but alas, it was meant for a younger time. It hasn't been open for some time, maybe approaching a decade in a year or two (wow, does that make ME feel old! )

Metairie is a suburb of New Orleans and actually if you are flying into the NO airport you are not in New Orleans but Kenner (another suburb).
