Ok,how horrible is this

I was musing about games gone by and remembered a little tidbit.
I had bugbears that had special armor which would hold a human baby
on the chest plate, the pc's did not have to fight them right that second and I had already worked out the ins and outs of hitting the bugbears
and missing the baby. One thing to keep in mind,I run a CoC inspired D&D game so horrible crap happens all the time. One of the players freaked on me,killing everything in sight, not even trying to miss the babies, then stormed out.

So<I'm thinking about bringing these bugbears back-

thoughts?

Well, as the guy who wrote the Bugbears entry for Classic Monster's Revisited, I gotta say - you are one messed up dude...and that is truly awesome!

:D

Sounds like you'd enjoy the most disturbing offerings even my twisted brain can dish out. You checked out Sinister Adventures yet?

If its the same group of players, don't do it.

If you don't have a good idea about how your current group would handle it, don't do it.

If you still want to do it, don't present the Bugbear Baby Breastplates as a fait accompli, present it as the beginnings of a storyline.

IOW, somehow, a spy has found out about the BBB plan, and the PCs are set to the task of thwarting it.

Have the party stave off a kidnapping raid or 2. One mini-adventure arc could involve a siege of a walled city by a Bugbear Brigand Brigade. That arc could include sallying forth from the gates to engage the enemy; going after sappers and burying the Bugbear bastards; using ballistas on the battlements against Bugbears in the bailey. But after at least one successful raid, the PCs decide they must go after the Big Bad Evil Bugbear who came up with the Bugbear Baby Breastplates plan, and kill him and his Brigand Brigades. Of Bugbears.

I like it, though it's more horrible in a darkly humorous way than a deadly serious way. It reminds me of somthing that one might find in HoL or Murphy's World. At any rate, it's not really fear or horror inspiring for me. On whether or not you should use them again. . .

It sounds like the player of yours that suffered an emotional breakdown might have. . . issues. If this player is still in the group, I wouldn't bring the bugbears back. If they're not in the group and nobody else had an out of character reaction, then use them as you see fit.

BTW, did they have Baby Bucklers?

In all seriousness, this tactic, while probably effective on some level, wouldn't translate to large-scale forces.

Too many bugbears, not enough babies.

Not to mention the care & feeding of the armor, and the noise factor- Bugbears like it quiet.

But it might just work for a small group of shock(ing) troops.

Ive always assumed that there were never all that many bugbears
(which is way mine resorted to this)

This is a very D&D-y idea. By that I mean it's the sort of thing that makes a certain amount of weird sense in D&D, but would never happen in real life, even if bugbears were real.

Like I said, that's just me. I'd have a hard time taking something like that very seriously, but I still think it's fun. I could never pull it off with a straight face (but I guess I wouldn't have to in HoL). More power to you if you can! :D
