If the posted info for a font on more than one site is in agreement I think I've done my homework. Some sites are better organized than others of course. Past that, the idea that the licensing might be out of date is a them problem, not a me problem.
Most font sites, in my experience, have you download a font as a zip file with the license included. They'll also list the license on the site itself. I honestly can't think of a single site I've used where it's not glaringly obvious what the license is. I've never had to hunt to find a license unless I've forgotten or not sorted / stored them properly. Font management software generally lets you make categories or tags, so long as you tag or file them correctly on download, you're golden.
My experience varies and I have, many times, even very recently, found multiple sites listing different licenses for the same file.
I actually think it's utter trash for actual sales. Sadly. I would never tell someone to publish just in Itch if they want to sell copies as a small indie publisher. Itch accounts for maybe 5% of my total sales. It's not great.
I suspect it depends on what kind of stuff you're selling. I would bet that Cairn stuff gets most of its revenue from itch. (Well, after the Cairn website.)
There are certainly specifc IPs that do well despite the utter lack of visibility and intuitive navigation. So anyone who has a strong IP where their sales are likely to come from links in other stuff, Itch is fine. It's a bag of monkey poo for folks who just want to get noticed.
It also has a better built-in infrastructure for jams.
