I usually wouldn't start a thread like this. I've never been a big follower of the Adult Swim community, but this was probably my favorite show. So it should come as no surprise that I didn't see in cancelation coming until tonight. As I watched the show and certain hints were dropped a lump started to form in my throat. I didn't know where else to bring this but to this hall of fellow geeks...
So it is official then? My girlfriend and I love this crazy little show. It's not up there with the snobbery of the Critic or the stupidity of the Simpsons/Family Guy, but it's pretty fun nontheless.
As we watched it, we too got the idea that yeah, it was over but have hope. Any word on a DVD release at least?

I'm not in the know on that. I'm only a casual AS viewer. This was still a kick between the legs for me. Of all the adult oriented animated sitcoms, this was the most subtle and poignant. I honestly feel empty. I suck..

Hmm I missed HM tonite and the announcement. To me the quality of the shows seems to vary wildly. But given AS current lineup, Home Movies was the least ferentic and IMHO the best written. The other shows while I like them often seem to be gimmicks or just a series of loose gags tied together.
Ive heard that 2 new shows are coming out The Venture Brothers whcihs should be cool, and the Squidbillies. I guess they had to make room.
Well, that was strange. They actually ordered new episodes as I understand it, since Home Movies was originally a WB or UPN series. That's too bad, it was a show that grew on me.
Mark my words: this is a show who's cred will only rise in the years to come. I don't fault anyone for its cancellation, but strictly on the aesthetic level, its AS's only show (if you don't count Futurama) that can't be described as 'disposable'. Assuming it sees a DVD release, I think its cult will only grow as it finds its audience. It did stick out like a sore thumb at Adult Swim, which probably hurt it in that regard.
It might even be brought back down the line by one cable network or another. Given how increasingly niche the television market it becoming and how how minimal the show's production costs were, I wouldn't be surprised. And finally, final episode was brilliant, but it capped off the themes of the season (pride and the need for one's work to be praised) about as well as it did the show as a whole.
I really liked this show. And yes, it stuck out like a sore thumb -- but I didn't actually watch any other AS shows. I watched this one. I loved the subtle things that, without fanfare or discussion, they worked into the episodes. McGurk slowly becoming a father figure for Brendan. Melissa looking for a mother. My wife and I were talking about last night's show after it was over -- we didn't realize it was the season finale, much less the series finale -- and it actually made her somewhat melancholy, not actually sad but melancholy. Watching all those completely dysfunctional people who were, yeah, over the top, but not usually cartoon-level over the top, and who didn't even realize what they were actually looking for. Spoiler of last ep:
Frankly, having the show end with all five of them driving off to get dinner as a family was almost a tearjerker, because it hit home the message that despite the many, many personal flaws they all had, despite the neuroses and idiocies and general wackiness, they were, in their own way, a family, with Brendan's mom taking on a surrogate role for Melissa and Jason's absentee mothers and McGurk a father who, if not perfect or politically correct, was at least there and kind of trying to help.
It will be missed. It was a nice show. No personal attacks on the network or complaints about the demise of television. It was just a nice show.

Bingo!!! I think last night's finally was as close to a tear jerker as television gets because many of the show's themes of family, childhood, and talent were understated. Many aspects of the characters were over the top, but those were only the most obvious traits (and I always thought the characters were always very aware of those); something deeper was always bubbling underneath and much of the more deadpan humor arose from that. I didn't visit AS's website until last night to confirm what I suspected; it was telling that most people who commented on the show(those who absolutly adored the Family Guy) only identified with McGurk's more overt exploits and never thought twice about his relationship with Brendan. Probably didn't belong on Adult Swim.
