[OT] Movies, Cthulhu and D&D

First Post
1) Has anyone seen the Necronomicon? If so, is it good?

2) Thir13en Ghosts. AWESOME movie and a great idea. Would this work for a plot for D&D/Cthulhu?

What other movies would be good for this?

Well, I dont think it was very popular but I really liked the John Carpenter film 'In the Mouth of Madness'.

Really need to buy the DVD one day.

The Seventh Gate(?) with Johnny Depp

I remember seeing a Cthulhu inspired/based movie starring Fred Ward as a PI, but it's been a LONG time since I've seen it and don't remember a whole lot about it, just a few key scenes that stuck in my head.

That was To Cast A Deadly Spell about 1940s Hollywood and the magic use. They had a sequel with Dennis Hopper and Julian Sands called Witch Hunt

Cast a Deadly Spell was that Fred Ward movie, which directly referenced the Cthulhu mythos. Thing is, it didn't really have much of the mood or feel of Lovecraft's work at all - it was a comedy, essentially.

Films that have a Lovecraftian feel:

The Wicker Man
The Exorcist, and Exorcist 3 (although 3 was a dumb film, it had some great atmosphere)
Carnival of Souls
Evil Dead - the first one especially has the feel, because Lovecraft's work is maked by a distinct lack of humor, but Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness both have very Lovecraftian elements
The Devil's Bride aka The Devil Rides Out

Would you be referring to The Ressurected. That movie was also based on an HP lovecraft story -The strange case of Charles Dexter Ward.

Oh yeah - the first Warlock movie has a good feel to it. Most of the ones I mention don't reference Lovecraft, but all have a feel to them that makes them very Lovecraftian in nature.

I am suprised nobody has mentioned "The Unnameable" (and its sequel.) (Not that it has that Lovecraft feeling to me but it is based on his work).
Since its my favorite John Carpenter Movie I will put in another vote for "In the Mouth of Madness"

There was another movie I watched recently, think the name might have been "breeders" that seemed to be very much based on the story, "The Lurking Fear," although the movie really was not as good as the story.

The Necronomicon is not a horrible movie but neither is it one of the greats and they do not portray IMO accurately what the Necronomicon is really supposed to be, making it a vehicle for a series of horror stories. I gotta admit too that I really like 13 Ghosts but it did not remind me of Lovecraft's work.
