Paladin Mounts as Familiars (and vice versa)

This might be bordering on "house rules" but...

Let's say you are a Gnome Paladin with one of those special mounts, let's say a Celestial Riding Dog. Later in your career you decide to pick up some magic skills and take a level of Wizard. I know the Familiar list is limited and that with DMs approval you can choose other familiars not on the list. So let's assume our Paladin/Wizard wanted a Celestial Riding Dog as his familair as well, could he do this? As the Paladin/Wizard rises in Wizard levels, his mount/familiar will get the benefits of each. Eventually he will be able to speak with it and such.

Is there any reasons why this would be a bad idea to do? Balance issues?

I'd say this were reasonable, the paladin has such a close bond with his mount anyway, it's the next logcal step if the paladin dabbles in magic.... However, the mount may not be so enamoured of the idea ... and the paladin would never force his mount into it.

WEll, a Celestrial riding dog would need to fall under Improved Familar as it is clearly better then the normal ones. Other then that it sounds fine.

I agree, but if you want to speak with your mount/familiar you will have to take more 4 levels as a wizard.
