Paladins and Prestige-classes

If monks or paladins take prestige classes, do they become ex-paladins / monks? Apart, of cause from monks out of an Oriental Adventures campaign...

Paladins do not become ex-paladins, depending on what the PrC into. Many PrC's designed for Paladins say they can continue advancing as a Paladin despite the PrC.

Excepting some.

Fist of raziel is the best paladin class ive found. Spellcasting progression and tons of abilities that synergize PERFECTLY.

If only more PRCs were this good.

Not so coincidentally, there are a fair number of DMs out there looking at the Fist of Raziel and saying, "If only no more PrCs were this overpowered."

::chuckles:: Where is this class from?

Depends on the PrC. Many state, at least for the paladin, that the multi-classing does not cause them to become ex-paladins. And finally, it also depends on the DM and what he/she rules. I've played with some who allowed any PrC without losing the ability to level as a monk or paladin, and others who do not.

One thing to keep in mind: It is a difference between not being able to advance further as a paladin, and becoming an ex-paladin.

I understand that you become ex-paladin through alignment conflict/religious heresy.. As ex-paladin you lose most paladin abilities except HD, skills BAB, base saves. Similarly for monk/ex-monk.

Taking levels in a class other than paladin/monk results in you not being able to take more Pal/monk levels. But as long as you remain LG (or lawful for monks), you will retain the paladin/monk abilities you already have, even if you cannot advance further as paladin/monk.

Generally - taking a prestige class means you leave the path of paladin or monk. Thus no turning back.

The exception here, is that there are quite a few prestige classes that explicitly allows for returning to paladin/monk after leaving said PrC.

Of course, doing away with the paladin and monk multiclass restrictions, is one of the most common house rules! There are no mechanical reasons to disallow paladin/monk multiclassing - just flavor issues. And that has even been mentioned on the boards by designers of D&D 3e. :)

This simple house rules would solve your little problem neatly!

Not really. You're not using the game term correctly. If you can't advance further as a paladin you're an ex-paladin. That doesn't mean that all ex-paladins are the same.

(Monks do not loose any class abilities from becoming ex-monks.)
