Paladins compared to Heralds of Valdemar

To those who have read Heralds of Valdemar books (by Mercedes Lackey)

Would you say they are a lot like Paladins: but without the worst aspects?

They have celestial steeds, are chosen because of their strong morality, are trained fighters, enforce the law, serve as judges, all have a detect lies ability, and many have a detect evil ability, BUT

Are much more likely to break rules in a good cause, act as spies, etc.

i suspect that Companions are a lot cooler than a paladins mount, without being just a class feature, more of a cohort.

Well, the magic system in the Valdemar books is a bit different than vanilla D&D (probably closer to psionics), but I see the comparison. I do think the Heralds are pretty much NG as an organization, rather than LG, though, in terms of the average member. Maybe even CG.

I haven't dealt with a paladin IMC yet, so I'm not that up on the paladin mount rules, but a Companion is probably a lot more powerful (as well as not being a 3.5 pokemount ;) ).
