My group is considering trying to 2014 D&D after a few decades on 3e. We want to try Eberron as well. I have many of the 3.5 books but we only ever ran a few sessions of it before going back to our typical settings (there was no strong reason for not sticking with it).

I am really hesitant about what the setting loses when brought outside of 3.5, for which it was tailored. I see lots of comments about lore or mechanical decisions feeling odd in 5e and like things need to be forced to feel right, where they would have felt at home in 3.5.

On the other hand, I know enough about 5e to know that it is a simpler system and probably lends itself to the quick, cinematic play that Eberron calls for in a way that 3e may not for some people. Although my group is proficient with the rules and don't really agree the arguments about it being a slog except at higher levels which we don't ever play anyways. I don't doubt that 5e will be simpler and quicker in most ways though. In any event, we just want to try something different. With 5.5 coming out I see 2014 5e as mostly "done" which feels like a good time to finally give it a whirl. I know that there will be far less options for optimization, which is on the other end of the spectrum of what we are used to, and is part of the draw as far as the difference goes.

All thoughts, opinions and anecdotes are appreciated. I am going through the 5e core and Eberron material and making notes. Would love to read what people have to say about this.

We aren't going to do non-D&D right now and have no desire to go straight to 5.5. Just hoping to hear opinions from people who really played 3.5 Eberron and also played or play Eberron in 5e. Opinions on how the rules inform the setting in both systems both in theory and at the table and so forth.

Thank you.

While Eberron was indeed based on the assumptions of D&D3.5, I've DMed in Eberron for both the editions in question & had fewer headaches with D&D5e because, as you say, it's a little smoother for pulp action & allows for more "wide magic."

3.5 ultimately proved too cumbersome for what I was trying to DM in college/grad school, so Keith Baker's enthusiastic embrace of the change in editions was more than enough to get me to buy Rising from the Last War.

Yeah, the biggest consternation over the shift in editions for Eberron was how to implement Dragonmarks. 5.0 used (sub)species; 5.5 used feat chains. Neither are what I would call ideal; I think I prefer the 5.0 implementation of the setting a bit better. In any case, 5th edition Eberron does in fact feel great.

In comparison to 3.5, in general or both?
Yes.

In general, @zerofor kind of hit the nail on the head with 5th edition being so much less fiddly and thus more suitable for the kinds of pulpy action Eberron tends to go for. Action points are easy enough to port over and they have an even bigger impact due to bounded accuracy (I would reduce the number of points granted to compensate).

Does 5e Eberron not have action points? That would be fine with me, I don't love meta game currency, and it seems 5e already has a lot more of it than 3e ever did (inspiration being another example).

I DMd Eberron with 3.5 for 2 different campaigns - both of which hit 10th level or so.

Haven't DM'd Eberron for 5e yet. But I also agree with @zerofor , the smoother play of 5e should really benefit play in Eberron. I'm looking forward to it.
So you're making the switch?

So you're making the switch?
Absolutely.

Also because I DM'd 3.5 through 20th level - and it totally burned me out. I will gladly play in 3.5 game, but would not easily volunteer to DM one.

I find 5 (now 5.5) just that much easier to prep and run. Have been running a Planescape campaign for some time now, group is 19th level and I'm still having a blast DMing. I'm sure that will translate over to Eberron.
