Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Champions-style disadvantages are like GURPS disadvantages, right? Meaning they are something taken at chargen in order to gain points to spend on things making you more powerful in other ways?

Yup. I'm actually middlin' sure GURPS Disadvantages were modelled on them, though they're more individuallized where Champions ones were more generalized.

Personally, I think that style of disadvantage works best if used as an offset to other advantages. E.g. as a fey creature you have wondrous magical powers but cold iron will seriously hurt and weaken you and you cannot tell a direct lie. For "stand-alone" disadvantages, I generally prefer ones that provide metacurrency rewards as they come up (or shortly thereafter), along the lines of FATE's aspects. Instead of having a bum leg give you some chargen points, you get metacurrency whenever your bum leg prevents you from doing something.

But I totally get that that's a matter of taste.

Honestly, it just seems like binning the benefits; after all, what are superheroic powers but "advantages" of a sort?

Its why when people complain about Disads taken to get more points I pointedly note they play games with attribute distribution, and what is setting one attribute low to put another high but a more limited version of the same thing?

Boy, for someone who claims to not care, they sure have spent a lot of energy on it.

Re. disadvantages - for my homebrew HERO System I've gone and married the original HERO disads to bennies. Basically, you get points at charatcer creation for disads. And when they come up in game you get bennies.

What do you do with Disads that have matters-of-degree? That's usually where the sticking point of that approach comes in. There's a kind of obvious patch for (give out more for the more intense disadvantages), but no one seems to do it, probably because the impact of individual metacurrencies is usually too strong to want them to come in at that rate.

Yes. They operate at the whole character level.

Champions has this, too, and they operate on the individual power level. Power advantages limitations make certain abilities more or less powerful depending on how the parameters are defined, affecting the building cost of the power.

Exactly - I give more bennies for more intense disads. 1 to 3 depending on intensity.

But a character can only earn bennies for a particular disad at most once per scenario. And bennies are only for the scenario in which they were earned.

This can still lead to quite a few bennies floating around. But I'm happy to have a lot of bennies floating around. It feels more cinematic to me.
