Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I remember one character a friend of mine made for one of my historical games. He was a "doctor" whose diagnostic method was phrenology and whose treatment method was trepanation. This was in a Mage: the Ascension game. And I got to have a discussion with somebody about how an examination of archeological finds shows that, when trepanation was developed, a lot of the skulls show bone healing, so it must have been a success. But when it was revived hundreds of years later, a lot of the skulls show no healing, so it probably didn't. Then Ignaz Semmelweis discovered the benefits of hygiene but by then they stopped using it for treatment.

Well, you have the whole leeches thing.

What probably happened was at some point someone figured out selective bloodletting was actually somewhat useful against severe bruising and other swelling. But since it was pretty much ad-hoc, no one had a good theory of why, so it got extended into things it was not only useless for, but actively counterproductive.
