Outdoor malls of one stripe or another predated the indoor ones and seem to have out-survived them. Possibly because they lack certain sorts of overhead the indoor ones had.

That's not actually a good counterargument if you study how many news sites went hunder after paywalling. Its not an ecosystem that will support all that much overhead (not, mind you, that there's great alternatives since the other ones that survived did it by getting by on the cheap and throwing ads like crazy, but that's the gig--they still survived at least).
