Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I had a teenage player in an earlier campaign who bought his own Monster Manual so he could look up whatever it was the PCs were fighting and tell everyone any weaknesses it had. My solution was to stop referring to the monsters by their true names, and show the players pictures from earlier editions of what their foes looked like. So when they were up against a bunch of skum, I showed them the Tony DiTerlizzi illustration from the AD&D 2E Monstrous Manual and referred to them as "fish-men." He had no idea what these monsters were and couldn't look them up.

And then, when I got tired of doing that, I just told him "no referencing the Monster Manual during game play unless you're the DM."

This is why I ban the books during gameplay.

Dark Horse Comics doing it right.

This talk of players knowing what monsters do and DMs changing abilities, reminds me that i think I now have enough stat blocks for customized versions of monsters (and many more unique NPCs) to publish el-remmen’s Manhandling Monsters Manual. 😂

The ad line could be “For when Flee Mortals! is too complex but the Monster Manual is boring AF.”
