Some eye opening discussion around here these last few days, but one of my main lessons? As I work on my own system?

The "D&D Tradition" of Spell Casting/Magic? Especially what its become but even at its root? Its not interesting. It doesnt feel like Magic SHOULD (and how does that even...) feel.

Its dull, painfully so in main line D&D.

Time to work on that.

First rule of holes- when you're in one, stop digging.

Second rule of holes- if you see someone digging in a hole, you don't have to jump in with your own shovel.

Third rule of holes- nothing stops you from throwing someone in a hole a shovel. It might make you a bad person, but you'll be a bad person with something to watch.

Fourth rule of holes - Always bring two shovels - you'll need one to hit them over the head with while they're busy digging their hole.

Would it serve you better if Wizards were eliminated and Warlocks, and Sorcerers were their effective replacements?

Back in the 1e days we tried using "casting from book" and "spell slots" equal to total spell levels known, but neither worked very well. Part of the issue, I think, was the relative power of Wizards as levels increased.

Somewhat, and I'm rebuilding the classes already, but its even more fundamental to me as of this morning.

Roll to Cast, Spell Points, Spell Slots, it doesnt really matter, if its DC 11 - 1d4 damage at X Range, or Level 1 Slot - 1d4 damage at X Range, that basis now that I really stare at it, just seems extremely dull, and no amount of scaling or bloat in either the dice rolled or the DC/Slot system is really going to change that fundamental nature of the "D&D Spell System".

If that makes sense.
