Playing Your Own Dungeon

GMMichael

Guide of Modos
(Hey, at least it doesn't say "with.")

Are there any GMs out there who
A) wish they could play in their own adventures/dungeons,
B) get someone else to run their dungeons for them,
C) automate their own dungeons so they can try them out?

I know I'd like to play in my creations, but I haven't met the GM who said "hi, would you happen to have some quests I could run for you?"

Unless you're running something published (and one hopes, playtested) you're basically submitting PCs to prototypes every time. What do you do for quality assurance?

I publish most of the adventures on DMsGuild after the players have gone through as a rough playtest and gramma check.

I'm not sure I would want to be a player in my adventures. Granted, I think they are fine enough but I would already know all the secrets and monsters and answers to the riddles and traps and such. I would either dominate the table and the others would not have fun or I would sit back to let the others enjoy and I would not enjoy as much.

I've been running games at my FLGS and I'm trying to run all of them ahead of time with my regular online group. It's made for a busy few weeks, but I think the store players have benefitted and my online players are enjoying a firehose of available games to play.

I haven't actually heard back from anyone who's used the stuff I've published but I'd love to hear from them, whatever the feedback might be.

I have written software many times now to automate AI being the DM, tracking a battle, presenting one room at a time from source material, as a developer by trade its really easy with today's AI coding tools.

I did it mostly so I could run old 1e modules using AD&D but it did not bring back enough dopamine to keep working on the tools

Does gramma generally approve, or is she too busy knitting? /snark

That's the hard part - knowing where the buried treasure is. I think I'd still benefit from the different perspective though, and probably try some things that I didn't think of when I was writing. Also, once the dice hit the table, it doesn't matter what you know and don't know.

Funny how hard it is to get feedback. We might have better luck with New Yorkers/New Englanders - aren't they pretty good about speaking their minds?

That's an option. Especially if the humans won't/don't provide feedback.

If I were a Skyrim modder, I'd just draw up my adventures there and play through them. That's an egg I have yet to crack, though.

Yes and no. Yes I'd love to play in my adventures.............except that I hate knowing what's happening in advance, which precludes my own adventures.

What I need is for YOU to create an adventure that I would have created, but haven't yet. :p
