I am a Game Master. I don't run wargames, I run RPGs.

ha ha - that action provokes an attack of opportunity from me! Furthermore, your position makes you flanked by our uberfighter-thief prepare for hot loads of sneak attack damage dice!

OK - so what happened that led to this proclamation?

People who treat RPGs as wargames.

That's where this RPG (D&D) came from my man ;)

I LOVE the wargaming aspect of 3.5 - miniatures required? Excellent! Defined combat rules? Excellent! Now I just need some mass combat rules I can fall in love with.

Honestly, if the wargaming aspect of RPGs turn you off - D&D may not be the game for you. Sure there are lots of folks who do it, but IMO they are swimming upstream.

I hear you. Play a boardgame or join a WarHammer game if you want to move little pieces about the board. I wanna play.

Of course, I would add powergamers to the list, since we're starting a flame war anyway :p

Well, I do like D&D because of its combat system, but roleplaying games should have a great deal of roleplaying as well. Just seems obvious to me. One shouldn't make a character that will be worthless in a roleplaying situation.

That is true.

This is not. I like to think that we've grown beyond our roots, but saying things like "minis required" tells me for some people we haven't.

I use a mat when it's important, the rest of the time I don't. If you have to have one for every move the PCs make, then the game is broken, IMO.

The D&D game assumes the use of miniature figures, and the rules are written from that perspective. This book contains a battlegrid and other tools to help you visualize the action.

Evidence for my "swimming upstream" comment.

PLay D&D if you want to move miniatures around a battlegrid according to the DMG ;)
