Pseudodragon's first level

It has an ECL of 5(2 dragon HD, LA+3), so it will need the xp of a 6th lv character (ie: 16,000xp) before it can take its first class level.:)

Ugh. That's awful. That's a terribly long time to wait for it's first level of dragon shaman, so that, eventually, it can become a real dragon with a real breath weapon. It won't get a 2d6 breath weapon until the equivalent of 10th level now.

Okay. Now I'm not understanding something.

If my player's 8th level PC has a pseudodragon as an associated NPC, does the pseudodragon need 5,000 xp to get its first character level because it started with 10,000? Or does it need 15,000, because it started with 0?

And my PhB says that you need 15,000 xp to achieve 6th level. Why are people posting that it's 16,000? Is that an LA/monster thing?

16,000xp is a typo, apologies for any confusion caused. :p

Depends on how much xp your DM let it start with. The rules are silent on that, just that it should start with as much xp as the rest of the party (and using the savage progression rules where possible to ensure that said monster PC's power level is roughly on par with the rest of the party). :)

But it starts the game with 10k (as an ECL 5 character), so it only needs to earn 6k before hitting that total.
Yep, this. Except it's 5k, of course, as has already been noted.

For all intents and purposes other than actual HD/levels (and the things that come with those), ECL x characters with any amount of LA are still treated as [effectively] starting at level x.

-Hyp.

To see if I get the concept; if I have a Lizardfolk character (ECL 3 = LA+1 + 2HD), I start out at 3rd level XP (3k) and can take the first level of a player class at 4th level XP (6k)? Or is their starting XP dependant on the level of the rest of the party?

There may be a rule for 'starting xp dependent...', but I've never seen it used. It's usually a DM/house rule that the new PC starts at some level near but not greater than the current party members.

Thanks,
Rich

Yes and no.

Typically, to prevent possible game imbalance, a DM should allow a monster PC to start play in a party of the same lv as his ECL. For example, it is recommended that a lizardfolk (ECL3) begins play in a 3rd lv party, not sooner.

If we assume that the party had just reached 3rd lv (3000xp), then the lizardfolk should have the same xp as them, so they can all level at the same rate. If the party has 4500xp, so too should the lizardfolk.

And remember that it gets gear appropriate for a PC of its ECL as well. Many DMs tend to overlook that fact.:)
