Question for single player game

I'm teaching this kid D&D (4E) and its just me the DM and him. He decided to play a Dragonborn Fighter, but I'm thinking of putting in an NPC to adventure with just to help him out (since its his first time playing and he's 11). Anyway what role do you think that NPC should be? Whats a good 2 player combination if one a defender?

Thanks for your help!

I would probably do a warlord with Commander's strike as an at-will. This gives him healing backup, plus more "turns" as you (the DM) will mostly just let him hit again when not healing him. (I've been thinking warlords should get Weapon Proficiency: pom poms).

Encourage him to go with a two-handed weapon and maximum STR, since you won't have a striker for high damage, and you won't have a lot of squishies that would require a stickier, more defensive fighter. Also, make sure both of you carry bows and go easy on flying or other inaccessible foes, since your ranged abilities will be poor. Perhaps your worlord can be an Eladrin, so you can fey-step to that inaccessible ledge and take out the archers when needed.

That's actually a very good idea as it allows the part to be split up easily. Perhaps the PC sees the Warlord teleport somewhere he can't immediately reach, but if he fights his way through these mooks he can join up again to gain up against the BBEG.

Personaly, i'd go with a healer since he will be shield. It also makes a good bodyguard background for the dragonborn if he likes that.

Elven or Eladrin lasercleric ?
