I would choose Terrain Expanded and Adventure role so you get the creatures you want
I'd just let ranger pets be a standard companion rather than a spell, though I do suppose spell levels are a useful too for managing them. I just loath to have every thing be magic.

I would require magic for other upgrades though (infusing pets with elemental/fey energy) and Drakewarden should be a subclass
yeah, i mean i understand what OP is trying to do with '24 ranger's favoured enemy but even if it wasn't Hunters Mark as the chosen spell. i don't really think 'here you get to cast this one spell a bunch of times with various minor improvements as you level' is something that really fits the ranger.

personally if i had my choice i'd replace the favoured enemy improvements with ranger eldritch invocations/arcane infusions.

Ranger pets noy being magically requires a new edition. Not enough design space or even game design was set aside for it. Hence the awful stat of the original 2014 5e beast master.

Adventure role is my top choice. A spell that summons a Small dog-like statbock, Small bird-like statblock, Medium wolf-like statblock, and Large horse-like stat.

Like Summon Beast but the Combat form has more HP and Damage and is Medium, the Scout form has Flight, Darkvision, and is Small, and the Mount form has high AC and is Large.

This would be a really good idea. I would keep Hunter's Mark at 1st level with 2 free castings but give Rangers One Eldritch Invocation off of the Warlock list at level 3, 5, 13, 17 and 20 instead of the scaling and HM features at those levels.

i was thinking they'd probably get their own list to pick from than using the warlock's but yeah basically.

Absolutely, with a solid set of options, but i still would want the ranger to choose a Favored Spell at level 1 if they are getting a free spell with 2 free uses.

I'd love to not cast HM as a ranger, and use my concentration for other things.

I have never once wanted to cast hunters mark and I don’t see that changing

I am playing a lot of 2024 Rangers and they have it, so I do cast it, but it is usually either at low level or when there is not something else I want to cast or do.

One of my groups jokes about it because I lose concentration very quickly, often without ever hitting a target and doing the extra damage. This is because I am generally playing with a mediocre Constitution (10-12) and because it requires you to attack, which for most of my PCs leans towards melee.

I will say it has some promise on a multiclass when used with upcast Spellfire Flare. That can be some really good single target damage with a 4th or 5th level slot, but I have yet to use it like this.

Great idea.
Will never happen in a way that is satisfying to many.

Many of the homebrew Ranger tricks lists are worse than what exists and would be butchered by real scrutiny.
