No mention of Racoon City or Umbrella corp. Did see some enemies from the game however. Looks like a whole original story however, so there's that going for it. If you didn't know the game or the pervious movies it's just another generic horror movie teaser.

Apparently this movie has virtually nothing to do with the games (spoilers in the link below):

Initial reaction is WTH? Though, thinking about it RE has had many adaptations that cleaved close to the game and its always been sort of below average to average. I think this approach could either take RE in a new interesting direction, or it could just join the ranks of the pile of movies we already have. Personally, I think the small stake action romp sounds refreshing as a palate cleanser of what came before.

I love the Resident Evil games and I even love the OG Resident Evil movies. All of them. Even the dumb ones, you ask? No. Especially the dumb ones.

I am also psyched out of my mind for this movie.

I can't think of any current horror writer/directors I am willing to give a bigger benefit of the doubt to at this point than Zach Cregger. Not even Jordan Peele. Barbarian and Weapons were that damn good.

It looks a heck of a lot better than any of the Resident Evil movies from previous years.

So, like, does the movie have almost nothing to do with the games or does it have almost nothing to do with the universe the games take place in ? Those are technically two very different things. The first could be totally fine. The second very much less so.

Really seems like the former. Cregger also has a history of holding things very close to the chest before one of his movies comes out. It's going to be hard to say anything for sure until the movie is actually out

Which might be intentional, but it’s a risky move. A teaser is usually where you hook both fans and casual viewers, and right now it feels like it’s trying to stay too vague. I get that they may want to keep the bigger connections hidden for later trailers, but at least a hint of the classic elements would have helped ground it.

The tone looks decent though, a bit darker and more survival-focused than some past adaptations. If they actually build tension and don’t overdo the action, it could still work. I just hope this isn’t another case where the name is used website but the identity gets watered down.

I’m kind of in the middle on this. On one hand, I get the concern about it drifting too far from the source, because at some point you have to ask why even call it Resident Evil if the core elements aren’t there. On the other hand, sticking too closely to the games hasn’t exactly produced amazing movies either.

What gives me some hope is the smaller scale vibe people are mentioning. If it leans more into tension and horror instead of over-the-top action, that could actually work in its favor.

I think it really comes down to whether it captures the atmosphere. If that’s there, people might be more forgiving about changes.

The games have always had campy cliched B movie narratives. That’s an observation, not a complaint. And the movies have followed in that tradition. So is it possible to make a good movie that is faithful to bad source material?
