resolving a use rope attack

i have a player in my game who wishes to use a "slip knot" on his length of rope. he wants to attempt to "lasso" an opponent and possibly pull their legs out from under them or tie it to a horse and then begin dragging the victim. i'm not sure how to go about resolving this. any help would be appreciated.

Just off the top of my head - a Use Rope check with a DC of the opponent's touch AC to get the lasso on 'em. After that, handle it like a trip attack using a whip: if you win, they're tripped, if they win they can counter-trip you as normal (you get pulled off-balance), but you have the option of dropping the rope instead of falling should you so choose.

As for the dragging behind the horse bit... heck, I don't know... 1d6 dmg per round of dragging, maybe?

Use the rules for the Net except have his use rope check be the DC for an escape artist check to get out.

Don't let his Use Rope check replace the attack roll but do assign a -4 penalty for an improvised weapon (concidentally the same as the penalty for using a net without the EWP ;) )

I'd go with Argo's method of resolving the attack and use Sejs's method of resolving the consequences, except for the dragging damage. I'd base that on 5' squares dragged, perhaps 1d6 per 10' but that's house rule territory, as far as I'm aware.

My centaurs use lassos a lot. We treat it like the Net, but with a 15' range. (I like the idea of using the Use Rope roll as the escape DC, I may use that.)
With their high STR, they usually succeed on the Trip attempt, and then drag the fallen foe away from his friends, while another centaur gallops alongside the dragged foe spearing him repeatedly (at +4 for prone opponent). With their high movement rate they usually outrun any would-be rescuers.

I'd probably allow a Reflex Save at a relatively low DC to avoid the rope, if it were me. It's not easy to lasso an intelligent foe who understands what you're trying to do. Harder, when they've got a sword in one hand to fend off the rope.

Plus, a rope isn't nearly as effective as a net at ensnaring a target..

Hmm, of course the same could be said of bolas, or a whip, or a net. None of which give easy Reflex saves. The whip and bolas allow ranged Trip attacks (touch attack followed by opposed STR check), but do not "entangle". The net automatically entangles with a touch attack (no save) but does not Trip and must be re-folded after each throw.
While the target of a lasso probably shouldn't count as "entangled", the lasso-wielder ought to be able to control his movement, as per the rules for the net. I can see requiring a one-round "re-ready" time after a missed throw, and I agree that the Escape Artist DC should be lower that for the net (DC 10?).

Here is something official, edited (nurfed?)to not give away the milk for free
BoED p34

30’ max, Trip
Ranged Touch to Partially Entangle (–2 on attacks,
–4 penalty to Dexterity).
By holding the attached rope, the thrower can keep
the opponent within 30’ with an opposed ability check
To remove, a skill or ability check

Pretty cool, would be even better as a spell storing weapon, as it goes vs. touch ac.Use it from suprise so they have almost no AC.I wonder how weapons enhancments like flaming or shocking would work?Would it do 1d6 of damage every round until the target got free?Nah, to good but i must go research the RAW on that, 'cause it is cool! Sundering does seem worrysome though-if a Flaming Lasso(sounds like a drink in a CountryWestern Gay Bar...) caught me, Id cut my way out...
