What do you mean "announce that this is all canon"? Since when has that been the definition of what is and is not 'fanfic'? Companies aren't in the habit of announcing each new installment to be canon.

I think the show has some real clunkiness to it sometimes, or decisions that make me scratch my head, but then it turns around and does something beautiful or amazing, and the latter definitely outweighs the former for me. The cast is great, the show looks great for the most part, and it feels like a valid adaptation.
