This week’s article offers reviews of RPG crowdfunding projects that end between October 25 to November 2. From 5e and Mörk Borg to DCC, MCC, A5E, and original systems, this sampling of what’s out there ranges from fantasy to sci-fi and beyond.

Dark Places & Demogorgons for Old-School Essentials from Bloat Games

• WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Bloat Games takes their most popular setting, a Stranger Things inspired OSR, and pairs it with the OSE ruleset. This is perfect setting and perfect system as they feed into each other. Both feel 1980s, but take advantage of hindsight and improve the layout, editing, and feel over what would have been created in the 1980s. Converting two books, this project gives you the Dark Places & Demogorgons core book and The Cryptid Manual, a monster manual, all with OSE rules, plus a number of adventures and bonus material. If you’re a fan of Stranger Things but want a decidedly old school feel, these are the books for you.

Anansi's Tapestry of Lives from NeverEnding, Inc.

• WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Because 320 to 360 pages worth of NPCs (over 100 of them) is what I want for my 5e campaign. I always need more NPCs. To sweeten this project, the NPCs have side quests, magic items, stat blocks, and voice acted monologues. Coming with Tarot sized NPC cards, you get NPCs that will say something, including an adventure hook, using an audio app. This is a cool offering and if a number of NPCs interests you, check out the page for a free PDF preview.

The Valley Out of Time for S&W DCC MCC Part 5&6 FINAL! from Skeeter Green Productions

Coming in two book, Rotten at the Core and Gods Walk the Valley, these zine sized adventures are part of The Valley Out of Time series. Rotten at the Core is the fifth part in the series for levels 6 to 8. The booklet comes in at a huge (for an adventure) 60+ pages. Gods Walk the Valley is the sixth part covering levels 8 to 10 across 30 pages. These adventures, along with the prior parts, offer a solid adventure path for DCC and MCC campaigns.

• WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This is a brighter than normal post-apocalypse RPG. It takes concepts from Powered By The Apocalypse and Forged in the Dark, but puts its own twist on them. Inspired by Turbo Kid, Tank Girl, and the Danger Days album from My Chemical Romance, this RPG is about the end of the world and rocking out against the tyrants that sit on top of the new world order. What’s fun about this are the stickers. As you succeed with certain skills, you gain stickers showing your progression and abilities. From Michael Addison and Banana Chan, this looks like an engaging new take on the wasteland battlefield.

Veranthea Codex: Grethadnis (for D&D 5E and Level Up: A5E) from Mike Myler and Rogue Genius Games

If you’re a fan of A5E, this book provides setting options to add to your medieval campaign adding some tech options like guns and a metaplot involving a looming war. Psi-Kids: A Dark Coming of Age Science Fiction RPG from James The Geek

• WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? On a generational spaceship with over 500,000 passengers, you’re 300 years into your search for a new home. Using a card based system, you play has a group of kids living in the gutters of the ship when you develop psychic powers. Now, the rulers of the ship can’t hold you down anymore. This project is inspired by Firestarter, Carrie, Push, Stranger Things, and Scanners, but with a deeper sci-fi twist, all of which resonate with me. • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Read this pitch like The Muppets’ Pigs in Space: “Mörk Borg in space”, but much darker. 150 pages of pigfolk blasting through dying space. The standout, as with all Yog'du Games offerings, is the artwork. Michael Harmon’s pignaut pictures are things of beauty; the pigs look terrifying, perfect for a sci-fi version of Mörk Borg. If you want to be self-serving, slop hungry pigs with guns in the void of outer space, you will not find a cooler offer.

Dark Places & Demogorgons for OSE is a great combination. I don't have to learn a new set of rules (even if old school) and I can easily pull in so much D&D material without conversion. And a two book complete set along with adventures makes it ready to go from day one.
