Savage Species: Playing With ECLs

thundershot

Adventurer
I finally got SS today, and I absorbed information for about 3 hours, and started pondering...

They tell you how to make the ECLs for monsters, but don't really go into templates.

Here's what I got when I broke down the Sylph from MM2:

Sylph

Unbalanced Ability Scores +1
Size Small –1
Fly (good) +2
Spell-like abilities +1
Casts spells higher than HD +1
Spell resistance +1

Hit Dice 3
Level Adjustment +5
ECL 8

I compared it to an 8th level Sorcerer, and it casts one level lower, but is severely lacking in hit points and saving throws. The flight and SR, I figured, made up for it, so I just left it as-is.

I started to do Pennaggolan from OA, but ran into a speed bump. Most notably.. well... you look to see what I got:

Pennaggolan

Unbalanced Ability scores +1
Natural armor +1
Fly (good) +2
Attacks +1
Domination +1
Improved Grab +1
Undead +2
Turn Resistance +1
Damage Resistance +1
Fast Healing +2
Constrict +1
Ability Score Damage (con) +2
Racial Skill bonuses +1
Bonus Feats +1
Resistance +2
Fear +1

Hit Dice 0
Level Adj +21

WTF?! For a creature that's only +2 CR, it sure is wicked as a PC! Hell, I can't even figure out how they only got +2 CR! In any case, there wasn't a listing for the LA for an alternate form, but I think 21 was enough. I haven't yet compared it to a 20th level NPC (didn't want to deal with Epic)

Any thoughts? Anyone else start breaking down any creatures? Heck, we should compile an online listing of creatures to make things easier for people...

Thanks
Chris
