Looks like there is another cairn near maeshow..... So that's now on the list. Two places we had planned to see are sold out.... Both weeks ago, alas. The Chambered Cairn and The Balvenie Distillery. I'm only really bummed about the cairn.
I don’t like all this pre-booking stuff that you get these days. Last time I was up that way you just turned up and went in. I remember going to see some cairns with my parents, but they were just three very large piles of stones, with public access. If you're talking about Maeshowe, I presume you're going to Orkney. The Cuween Chambered Cairn is nice. It was too muddy when I went to clamber inside, though.Looks like there is another cairn near maeshow..... So that's now on the list.
Can't make Hoy work timing wise. But yes, we'll be hitting as many standing stones and other things as possible in one day.... The place I wanted to eat is closed on Sundays, so thanks for the recommendation! Hopefully it starts to warm up soon....If you're talking about Maeshowe, I presume you're going to Orkney. Orkney is one of my favorite places to visit. I would recommend eating at the Kirkwall Hotel. If you can take a tour of the Highland Park distillery, it's good stuff. The Standing Stones of Stenness are cool - you can get right up to them. Marwick Head is a pretty walk.
If you can manage it, I would definitely recommend taking the ferry out to Hoy to see the Dwarfie Stane. If you do, grab a bit to eat at the Beneth'ill Cafe. The Scapa Flow Museum is cool, too. If you're into hiking, but the Old Man of Hoy is quite the site, though it's work to get to it.
Hard to say, the weather is quite changeable at the moment and set to stay that way. I think you should buy a kilt when you arrive. Will I need shorts? Hmmmmm.....
I have a sport kilt. No chance I'm bringing that! Also, hahaha. Does anyone actually wear them?Hard to say, the weather is quite changeable at the moment and set to stay that way. I think you should buy a kilt when you arrive.
Yes, be prepared for knees, and remember to avert your eyes in high winds.I have a sport kilt. No chance I'm bringing that! Also, hahaha. Does anyone actually wear them?
I have never needed shorts when I've gone there (generally have gone around April. Especially up north, it's notably cooler, the winds stronger. Maybe if you're planning on doing some serious hiking. Will I need shorts? Hmmmmm.....
