Shadowdark Shadowdark Discussion Thread [+]

What I have for types in my WiP right now is this

Generica - everything except the following
Foetor - demons, demonic magic, and demonic summoning (also the chaotic catchall)
Naturae - elementals, elemental spells, elemental summoning
Memento Mori - necromantic magic (but not undead)
Ostia - dimensional spells, teleport, other summoning

Each table will have four columns to generate elements - smells, tastes, sounds, and emotions (emotions are more for Imago generation, but everything in one table).
Something specific for fae maybe? Also Shadowdark has lots of witchy bits. Do those count as different than demonic?

SD doesn't have a lot of Fae content so it's not really on my radar, although I think it certainly should have its own thing at some point. I have secret plans to do a SD Fae supplement after my expanded core rules PDF is done. I may get the Fae in this one, but I also may not.

Smells like fairy dust?

Re: Alchemy
I assume that an alchemist can try to identify a potion (or the residues left by one)

That brings up a related question that the sneaky types will be interested in: Disguising potions. (Appears to be a different one, advanced recipes that mask some aspect (like tasteless), creating a cursed one deliberately...) There is only so much that anise can do. 😉

Outside reader caveat, as usual.

2e Jakandor had a NWP: Taste Magic (Int-2, 2 slots)

I've heard that archeologists have a lick test to distinguish between stone and bone.

Huh. Well that's a thing. I hadn't actually written in the identification of poisons and potions. It's in there now, although it's not an on-the-fly scale thing at all (that's what the identify spells is for). Thanks!

I'm probably not going to include any masking or concealing stuff. I think the use case is narrow enough without further complicating it.

As an outgrowth of some recent design stuff I decided to add a spread to my current project discussing downtime actions, and non-adventuring but not downtime actions, and how that needle can be threaded depending on the game.
