D&D General Should D&D Rethink The "3-Core" Model?

Should D&D Rethink The "3-Core" Model?

  • Yes, there should be more than 3 core books

  • Yes, there should be less than 3 core books

  • Maybe, WotC should consider alternatives

  • No, the 3-core model is good as-is

  • No, the replacement would be worse

  • My answer is not covered by any of the above choices

  • I just want to see the results, and accept that that means discarding my vote.

Sounds like an interesting game for sure. Did you start with less and you added more over time? If you started with 10 your very blessed to have so many good friends. Even with my close friends 5 is my limit to keep things even, well balanced and moving at a reasonable pace.
My limit is 5 at once due to sheer space considerations. If I have demand for more, I'll split them into two groups run on different nights.

I once knew a group that split into two parties (both playing MERP). One party played upstairs with their GM and the other played downstairs with their GM, all at the same time. At least one time they had a crossover and one group ambushed the other.

I think there should be four: two PHB, one DM guide, and one MM. I would split the PHB into "classes" and "races" with both containing info on how to create new classes, subclasses, and races.
Wait... class in one book and species in another? You would need both to make a single character?

Such as world neutral lore of the species plus their commonly used species traits?
Sure, could be neat.

Though I will say, just as a personal preference, that I like having world  specific lore, especially if there's multiple variables, over world neutral lore. I get that the latter is more intended for world-building, but I find the former to be more valuable for that purpose.
