Skill at Aide Other (the anti-skill monkey).

Garthanos

Arcadian Knight
Help I have an idea but not an implementation.

This idea is....inspired by elements of a thread about balance ... where it was brought up that in 4th Edition we can make very definite non-combatant PCs who inspire people to fight for them and who are in character "hiding and screaming" ... actually work well in 4th edition and the key component isnt even something brand spanking new (The Warlord).
[sblock=more quote]
When I built my Frodo baggins character I did build him with some of the latest rules... probably because I wanted him to be very good at hiding and made him hybrid rogue and warlord. ;-).

Frodo isnt a comedy relief but I do find the warlord useful for building comedy relief characters (out of genre characters). Non combatant in the middle of the fight get themselves in trouble almost constantly and coincidently the real heros are always in the right place to save them.

Warlord doesnt have to be visualized exactly this way but it really lends itself to it.....and the warlord is actually an under appreciated class.

The idea is a feat which could improve AA I am really zoning one what mechanics might work or to what degree it ought to function ... basicallly its the out of combat nod to the Warlords in combat ... non-combatant skinning.

My first thought was to have it cost one of there trained skills and then another thought was to have them to have broad penalties on any skill where they arent using Aide Other or something similar.

It could be visualized as them doing something silly or unrelated that just happens to point out exactly the right next move or something which acts as a reminder... (which could be done for any aide other but the idea is a feat that makes somebody awesome at it).

Aide another:You can instead aid a skill check or an ability check made by an adjacent ally. Make a DC 10 skill check or ability check. If you succeed, you give a +2 bonus to your ally’s next check using the same skill or ability.
Just examining the above.. perhaps the key element of the Anti-skill Monkey Feat is the audience for this is to create characters who don't have much direct skill in the area they are aiding another on. So its like getting a bonus when your ability is not your highest (or second highest even) or when you are aiding another with a skill you are untrained in.

It reminds me of the Jack of all trades feat because that enhances your "skill" at all skills you are untrained in by +2.

What about this mechanic:

Inspirational Aide: When using an untrained skill to aid another gain +2 on your attempt additionally on success the aided one gains a +3 instead of +2.

Too good? Too bad? Not interesting?

Just found the Warlord Feat which gives you or an ally improved Aid Another (+4). I somewhat like my take better because it focuses on untrained skills... but.
