Slay Living w/ Critical Hit

Something unusual happened in our game last night. An evil priest cast Slay Living and his touch attack delivery managed to roll a natural 20 on the party's priest. Just for kicks, I rolled to back it up, but rolled a 1. Unfortunately, the party priest rolled a 3 on his save and died anyways. This exchange raised some questions I wasn't sure about.

Obviously, you can't double-kill something, so in the case of the target failing it's save against Slay Living, the critical hit is meaningless. However, suppose the critical hit was backed up, and the party cleric made his save. Would the damage from the saved version of Slay Living (3d6 + CL) get doubled?

FWIW that is how I'd do it - a critical hit on die or take damage effects would double the damage taken. It was how I used old version disintegrate crits too.

Cheers

Furthermore, there used to be some feats and houserules that increased the DC against spells with a ranged touch attack when you hit with a crit.
