Personally I haven't much cared for Smallville in years. I thought originally it was an excellent show which devolved over time into little more than a teenage soap opera.

But I did watch this episode with the wife and kids and actually liked. Hopefully now he will grow up and the stories will become far more interesting and expansive.

I liked the stories where he was a kid, and hopefully now that he's maturing the stories will be interesting again. I even liked Jackson as Hawkman. (I don't know most actor's real names, I don't care that much about them or admire most enough to bother learning their names. But this guy strikes me as an okay fella.)

I couldn't stand that whole melodramatic-soap-opery-self-indulgent-angst-ridden juvenile era of the series. I hope they bury that period for good.

By the way I sure was glad to see the MM again (he and the Vision are the most under-rated and underused characters in comics).
Now if they'll just bring on Wayne.

Yeah, me too. Fortunately that ended a few years ago! It got much better when then all moved to Metropolis.

For legal reasons, no Wayne and no Diana.

All I can say is that it was really great to see Michael Shanks again in a tv show, even if its just a two parter, but it did leave it open for more possibilities in the future. One of the better episodes in, like, forever. And I like everything about this show, from series pilot till this one, I love this show.

So, there were heroes running around in brightly-colored costumes...but trying to stay out of the public eye?

It was fun watching this episode. Despite having essentially no budget, they want to pull out every stop they could. They had to figure out ways to handle things like a Hawkman whose wings can't flap. Not easy, but they're trying harder than they did last year with the non-battle between Clark and Doomsday. And harder than Heroes has since season 1. It all looked cheap and chinsy, but good for them.

Isn't this the first episode to have any kind of magic? Zatanna and Mxyzptlk were just methumans, IIRC.

Zatanna I believe learned magic from her Father's 'spellbook' and also directly from her father (until of cours it was lost). Mxyzptlk (who Im straining to remember) was from a family of unluck out of the Baltic regions (so likely a common family Metahuman trait). An other 'early' episode.. in fact part of a season arc was the magical powers Lana Lang and her 'posessor' had. It was witchcraft and as thus, magic.

Id also classify Dr Fates abilities as magical in origin (Ill state now I know NOTHING at all about the character bar what I learned from AJustice). I think the budget actually for this double ep was quite high compared to most Smallville eps. Its definetly though an issue for a show like this , where the character has 'super' powers. Im also not sure that Hawkmans wings were supposed to flap in the smallville version. Again his powers seem to come from his costume.. they are providing the powers.

Brent Stait brought some good ability to the show's interpretation of Dr Fate. I also agree with earlier comments RE: Martian Manhunter. Phil Morris brings a .. different approach to the Manhunter. Ive always enjoyed episodes with him in. Perhaps its because he does not appear so often.

Felon: I believe most of the Heroes tried to stay out of the Public eye. I was a bit perplexed over that line, I assume it meant they never stayed around to claim credit for things, used the cover of night for most of their work etc. Again after some time, even this would of become difficult to cover, which I guess is where the arrests kicked in. Im surprised some of them went willingly however (ie Alan Scott/Green Lantern: Isnt the guy supposed to be the protector of Earth? Cant do that from Prison)

Now that Smallville has been renewed for a 10th Season (which is amusing in and of itself), we may see more DC material being used. Im surprised nobody has spoke of the Tess Mercer( a character that seems like Davis Bloom to be unterutilised this season) scene re Checkmate. I did not see that at all, because of her once ultimate loyalty to Luthorcorp/Lex.

Great episode, very enjoyable. I continue to watch, week after week. Yes, there are better episodes and worse ones, with some occasional real duds, but my enjoyment from each episode is much greater than this whole season of Heroes. Maybe I'm just too much of a fanboy (even though I detested DC and loved Marvel as a kid).

In the comics, Hawkman's wings flap. In the episode, it's left ambiguous. Although they remain rigid in each given scene, they do appear spread in some and not in others.

Dr. Fate is basically an immortal lord of order--sort of a precursor to Marvel's Dr. Strange---and the idea that the Icicle could kill him like that is a little silly, but I suppose one could say it was fated.

That's a different Green Lantern, but clearly a bunch of flatfoots would be hard-pressed to take him in, along with Jay Garrick (the original Flash), and I couldn't help but notice the Spectre in that portrait. Kinda hard to imprison a guy who's the embodiment of God's wrath. So, in all likelyhood there was more than conventional law enforcement at work.

I think most folks regard Mercy was as a weak placeholder for Lex. She's inspired by Luthor's chauffeur from the WB cartoon. Eventually, they'll pick an actor to replace Michael Rosenbaum, and she'll be toast.

However, the references to Amanda Waller, the Suicide Squad, and the coming apocalypse (i.e. Apokolips) certainly pique interest.

Yeah, the 10 seasons thing is ridiculous.

"You have a great destiny ahead of you! You'll launch a new era of heroism!"

"I'm 33, and I've already faced every major villain I could have ever had. Can we just get me into tights before abs totally give out?"
