Social media to be fully banned for under-16s in UK.

This has been introduced in Australia. 2/3rds of kids aren’t already back using social media, so not sure how successful it will be.

Kids that social media already has its claws deep into will no doubt seek to circumvent. It does however encourage solidarity with the wider community of parents, enables teachers to take a firmer stance and most importantly of all, can stop it getting a foothold with the current crop of 7-10 year olds that haven’t yet been affected by it. It’s about the long game.

But social media is also information and community for many people and so yes, some parents will view it as harmful because it offers information and community which contradict their world-views.

There are many smokers that build an entire community around smoking. Many people met their best friends or significant others on smoke breaks and the like. Doesn’t make the drug any less harmful.

Creating community after harmful acts isn’t healthy for us in the long run. They should be dismantled, and community rebuilt around something that is

This is about a UK law. Other countries can decide what they do on a case by case basis. I’m saying you’re plain wrong when you say this is being driven by anti LGBT sentiment.

I think I have a pretty good handle on where the UK is. As you have on the US. It’s possible to still be pro LGBTQ+ and you still want it do more.

I grew up normal in one of the world's most liberal countries and I have never personally met someone who presented as a different sex (at least not as far as I know, so maybe someone I knew was just very good at crossdressing). We call that "stealth", and then, because we tend to be huge dorks, we make jokes about how "Transgender Awareness Day" gives us disadvantage on stealth checks

It’s probably more like 0.5-1%. As a GP in Canada I have 1400 patients and about a dozen of them have gender dysphoria, which is about right. In the U.K. 10 years ago I had a similar number with 2500 patients.

Just because a political party has a reputation for being pro-LGB and center-left doesn't mean we're seeing policies that support that reputation. The UK also has a reputation for transphobia, even among parts of the left (including the Guardian of all places), and that reputation is not only growing, it's being validated in policies that may be contributing to a spike in suicides in trans kids. For those of us watching that sort of news, it's very concerning.
The social media ban that's been proposed isn't exactly helping alleviate those concerns.
