I'm sure those numbers are getting much lower in the UK these days. By design, of course.

Certainly the number of people who would tell their GP (who might also be their parents’ GP - not that that should make a difference, patient confidentiality is sacrosanct, but I can see why there might be a trust issue). Especially since it wouldn’t do much good because your GP can’t refer you to a local gender clinic since one doesn’t exist.

Just because a political party has a reputation for being pro-LGB and center-left doesn't mean we're seeing policies that support that reputation. The UK also has a reputation for transphobia, even among parts of the left (including the Guardian of all places), and that reputation is not only growing, it's being validated in policies that may be contributing to a spike in suicides in trans kids. For those of us watching that sort of news, it's very concerning.
The social media ban that's been proposed isn't exactly helping alleviate those concerns.

Every single argument against LGBTQ people is simply undone by people being left handed, and in the past people were against that too. However it is impossible to look at the as not people trying to take away the rights of other people, and to take us back to a time before there were equal rights.

it’s possible to be broadly supportive without agreeing with every political ambition. But what you’re talking about goes off social media fully into politics. So not getting into it.

I also think that protecting one group of vulnerable people shouldn’t be a veto against protecting another much larger group of vulnerable people. Find another to provide the information.

Anyway. We’re kinda going round in circles here. The law is changing and everyone will adapt.

But should it involve actually making life harder for that minority group? I think both could be protected but not with the current Labour leadership.

I don’t believe it will. The fact that trans kids have an extra burden doesn’t mean they aren’t gaining all the other benefits of a ban. It’s a net benefit.

Considering how much time and money is involved in a court case, maybe an outright ban/law requiring age verification is easier and quicker to get put into action.

No law that is done quickly is perfect.

It’s probably more like 0.5-1%.

The US census in 2024 had it at .95%, so seems around that ballpark.

I don’t think it is. I think I’ve been really clear that a solution should be found by the community (that I am also part of). I just don’t think the solution is harming the other 99% of kids.

And to be clear, I don’t believe it is a minor harm, or low risk harm. It is pervasive and impactful. We’ve socially reprogrammed a whole generation of children. Then thrown that generation into the wilds with a load of anonymous adults and then added huge quantities of money through advertising revenues/scams without any regulation, standards, guidance or ethics. There literally is nothing else like it in the world, and there hasn’t since we took children out of the coal mine and put them into education. Pretty crazy when you think about it.
