Solo September

It's Solo September! A time to share and enjoy solo TTRPGs. What are you playing?

I am aware that Solovember is the month for appreciating solo games and will also be celebrating that but Solo September is also becoming a thing. IMO the more months we have dedicated to recognising solo games the better!

I’m going over my options for swords and sorcery play. For me, given various constraints, my options are four:

1. Loner, probably with a mix of bits from fantasy and horror and possibly other supplements.

2. Ironsworn with its official support, and maybe some 3rd-party stuff.

3. Starforged, with its mechanical improvements over Ironsworn, with a lot of rechroming.

4. Sundered Isles, with the additional system layer, for maritime adventure, maybe with flying ships and extra progressive rock playing.

The re e are other possibilities that just aren’t for my mood at the moment, like The One Ring with the Saruman or elf campaigns, or Vaesen either with one of its alternative settings or rolling my own. Good stuff, just not for right now. Likewise some system and tweaking the Totems of the Dead setting to suit my quirks and fixations.

It's always good to have extra tables and oracles on hand. I've played Starforged and enjoyed it but have not tried Ironsworn. Even though I have the PDF, I think I'll wait for the second edition before giving it a go.

As for me, I'm pondering All Night Breakfast at the Midnight Owl. There's just something about supernatural investigations that always gets me. I used to run a Monster of the Week actual play podcast, so it might scratch that old itch.

I'm soloing Idylls of the Rat King (d20) by Goodman Games, using OSE + OSE advanced and a simple d6 oracle. Finished level 1 of the abandoned silver mines near Silverton with the four classic characters. Lothar the fighter, Segure the cleric, Trevick the magic-user and Zobodan the thief.

It's fun to read the dungeon room by room, page by page, and not having to generate a story. The dungeon is the story. So far the party has found three parchments talking about a 'she-devil' caged in the lower levels of the dungeon. They also found the secret vault where the goblins hide the silver ore they stole from the human caravan. Today, they will descend to level 2.

My new homemade black cardboard 5' thick wall system works very well. Got tired of locking tiles and erasable markers. I made 1" strips of 20' and 10'

Ooh, that's a good setup! I've only played two solo dungeon delving type games and they were all right but didn't really vibe with me.

Thanks. My set up is permanent and I'm retired. I do short sessions of 30 minutes to 1 hour between daily chores and other activities. Some days I can do up to 3 sessions and the go 3-4 days without playing.

When I sit down to play solo, it's because I really want to play. I don't force anything like a used to do. It was too frustrating.

I'm good with hex crawl and dungeon crawls, once in a while. I was a chit & hex wargamer before I discovered D&D in 1980. Fills my need for a good fight, and I prefer skirmishes to large scale multi-unit battles.

I've been eyeing it for awhile now, and it is right up my alley. Also Twins Peak/X-Files vibe, just like All Night Breakfast!

My normal solo setup is usually TinyD6 ruleset (Tiny Cthulhu mostly but I borrow liberally from other TinyD6 games) with Mythic GME 2e. My love of Mythic knows no limit!

I've played Little Town and enjoyed it but that is because I'm a fan of Powered by the Apocalypse games. I made some different roll tables to make it more local to me and I ignored a move or two to make it suit my style. I've had only a quick glance at the stuff in All Night Breakfast and it seems quite similar, maybe a more polished version of Little Town or inspired by it? I won't know until I play it.
