[Soloing TTRPGs] General Discussion [+]

I know if I played a solo dice-RPG I'd have a recording of myself saying "you'd better make a saving throw" and "you miss, next turn." Those would fill in nicely for the lack of a GM.

Is anyone lured into solo games by getting to take over some GM duties, or is that just the price you're willing to pay for not needing another player to show up on time?

I mean, you do you. There is no correct way to play an RPG solo. If you are having fun, you are doing right.

There is no price to pay. Playing in solitary mode is simply a different type of gaming experience. Many people who play with groups also play in solitary mode.

There are GM books like the Mythic Game Master Emulator 2e with procedures used to play without a GM. It's called a solo oracle

For my part, I started playing solo because I wanted to play RPGs that no one wanted to try. Best decision I ever made. I had around 20 unused systems on my book shelves. Now they are all played. Turns out playing a system solo helped me have a better understanding of it. It was easier to GM for the group if they wanted to try it out.

As @Thierry-Advent says, it’s not really that kind of choice or price. I like thinking of solo play as several kind of play all their own - solo skirmishing like the Four Against games, journaling games, solo storytelling, etc. Including playing usually multiplayer RPGsNeither solo tools’ support. A fair number of folks start soloing in make-do ways and then come to enjoy solo play as its own things, not compensating for other things’ absences.

I’m a simple soul. I like something that delivers the classic six (yes, and; yes; yes, but; no, but; no; no, and) and lots of tables for specific kinds of situation.

I don’t hate cards, but like Bartleby the Scrivener, in prefer not. I do dislike systems that want me to separate a regulator Tarot deck by suit or otherwise portion it out.

I’m also a fan of the d6 and tables. When I use a tarot deck I let the illustrations inspire me. No formal method.

As an Everway fan, I know that anything can be a fortune deck. :) And sometimes I use the actual thing, for cards like Drowning in Armor and Striking the Dragon’s Tail.
